and delia gallagher there in rome. let's go to you. because is this, do you think, a diplomatic test of the pope to see just how far he might go in trying to influence mr. putin to enforce that cease-fire in ukraine and bring the fighting to a close? >> yes, i do, rosemary. i think this is a tricky one for pope francis. we've seen in the past that he shows great creativity when it comes to discussions with political leaders. and we might see some kind of a surprise from the pope today in his discussions with the russian president. he has a great ability to take something out of the box. we saw it in israel when he invited the israeli and palestinian presidents to come for a day of peace and prayer at the vat caican. he has a tight rope to walk. he has been criticized by the ukrainian catholics. at the same time, the vatican likes towards moscow and its relationship with the russian catholic church. the question of the divisions between russian orthodox and the catholic church. the russian orthodox listen closely to the pope's language

[ speaking foreign language ] and catholics are called to take them seriously. pope francis is not the first to express concern about the environment. john paul ii and pope benedict have added their voices to the topic. but francis is the first to dedicate an entire encyclical from economic concerns. >> i don't get

delia gallagher joins us lye.ds of people have turned out to hear the pope speak at this mass. he seems to be sharing this message of peace. >> reporter: that's right, in fact, coming over today from rome the pope came back and said to us that that was his message. that sarajevo was a city that suffered greatly in the past, but it's on the path to peace and that that is what he wants to talk about here today. he comes in a sign of peace and with a prayer for peace. that is what the some 65,000 people behind me are doing right now with pope francis at this mass. now when he got off the plane, the first thing he did was he actually held that as a model for the rest of the world for peaceful cohabitation between, as you mentioned, the three different ethnicities and religions that are trying and have been trying for many years now to live together and to govern side by side. the bosnian bishops have brought to the attention of the vatican a catholic minority. and that in some situations where the country is governed

we want to bring in cnn's vatican correspondent delia gallagher.f you can hear me, as to why this visit is so particularly significant. >> i can't hear very well, but i'm going to go ahead and give you a little rundown of what's been happening since we arrived here in sarajevo just a few hours ago, from rome, if you can hear me. this is the closing song of the mass, so all 65,000 people here are singing quite loudly. but when we were coming on the plane with pope francis from rome, he said that he was coming here with a message of peace. sarajevo he said is a city which has suffered for a long time, but it is on the path to peace. and that, indeed, has been his message here at this mass. one of the things that he said is that even if we don't have mo war on our doorsteps, we have a sense of war because of global communications today, because of the internet. so he's speaking not only to the people here, but of course have suffered one of the bloodiest wars in europe since world war ii. but he is giving a message to the world to say that even if you

delia gallagher, cnn, rome. >>> thank you so much for joining us here on cnn. of course we know a copy of the pope's encyclical has been leaked but it's not the final version. so what are you expecting pope francis will say about climate change? >> well i think we can assume based on comments he has already made that he is going to affirm that climate change, global warming, is the result -- a lot of it is a result of man's activity. so with the heating of the earth and with fossil fuels he will talk about those very specifically, i believe because he has spoken about them before and critique the way we have not moved forward toward renewable energy and depended on the energy that is heating up the globe. >> why do you think the pope's encyclical was leaked? who benefits from that? >> well i'm not sure about why it was leaked. there is speculation that those who are not happy with him in the vatican leaked it to embarrass him or someone gave it to a journalist friend who passed it on to someone and this was a scoop for the italian paper that published it, altho

let's bring in our vatican correspondent delia gallagher. is one of the most sacred religious items on the planet. this is one of the top items on the agenda. >> it was important to the pope to go and pray in front of shroud. the shroud for centuries has been a mysterious and venerated icon of the catholic church. it has a man's image who was crucified. it has blood on it. it has been scientifically tested throughout the centuries, they have never come to i aconclusive one way the other whether it's a hoax or whether it's the authentic burial cloth of jesus. nevertheless popes throughout the centuries and certainly many catholics have gone to turin to pray in front of what pope benedict called an icon. so pope francis did that early this morning at the beginning of this two-day trip to turin. he is finishing up a mass in the central square. he also met with workers from turin. it's one of the great industrial cities of italy. if you've heard the fiat car, that's where it's headquartered. pope was talking about the economic dignity of work. h
