abc 2 news delia goncalves is live downtown with more. delia?marybeth, they say you can blame it on the economy. the spokesperson telling us just a short time ago enrollment took a huge hit. and this coupled with a $650,000 budget deficit, they say simply there was no way towson catholic could recover. towson catholic the oldest and one of the few coed parish high schools, saw a drop of enrollment of 81 students, leafing a total of just 163 students. they will now have a meeting for parents and students next week, we're told, to discuss other schools where they say for the first year, parents and students will be able to pay the same reduced tuition of $9,500 a year they paid at towson catholic. we're told teachers and staff members, 20 of them, will meet with hr tomorrow in an effort to find other jobs. the archdiocese intended to break the news in a face-to- face meeting tomorrow, but because word leaked out early, they were forced to make phone calls today. >> extremely distressed and disappointed over the way it has become public. because we

we're live in towson, delia goncalves, abc 2 news. >> thanks, delia. some of towson catholic's notable alums include carmelo anthony and anita nall. it is also the latest in a number of schools that the archdiocese of baltimore is closing. in may we told you about the closing of st. mary of assumption school in gauvins. after 135 years of providing a catholic education, the school simply could not afford to go on. it had been operating under a massive amount of debt. >>> and in april, the catholic community school in federal hill announced its plans to close. it was also operating under debt, and reportedly out of money. here are all five of the schools the archdiocese is closing thus far, including towson, st. mary's and the catholic community school. as you see, st. michaels in frostburg will also be closing its doors. if you would like to learn more, we've provided a link to the archdiocese website at abc2news.com. and these closures are a telltale sign of the tough economic times. stay with us tonight. in just about nine minutes, we'll have more in

our delia goncalves is on or live near the scene now and joins us with more. >> reporter: we just arrived in the 900 block of reisterstown road. i want to get out of the shot and show you what it looks like. you can see it's still very active. about an hour or so after this fire first started, just before 5:00, we are told firefighters have knocked out flames. but you can see continue to work on the roof. continuing to douse hot spots. what we're told, just before 5:00, an flow of the restaurant was inside the storage room located right next door at 917 reisterstown road, smelled smoke inside a storage room, quickly ran out into the restaurant and got everyone out. we're told there were 35 people inside the restaurant who evacuated safely. those 35 people included customers and employees. thankfully they're all out safely we can tell you this evening there is heavy fire and smoke damage inside that storage room at 917. and we're told the restaurant just suffered some minor smoke damage. of course, we are waiting for investigators to arrive here on the scene to determine exactly what was t

delia goncalves is live at johns hopkins hospital where the victim is still very critically wounded. delia? >> reporter: surrounded by her family, and at times mayor sheila dixon herself, little 5- year-old raven wyatt is still holding on one week after stray bullets nearly took her life. the tragedy has highlighted a troubled agency, department of juvenile services. >> it was a horrific scene marked by sad remains. surgical gloves and little pink flip-flops. 5-year-old raven wyatt has been clinging to life since being shot in the head last thursday. adding to the outrage is that the suspect, 17-year-old lamont davis was placed on hall monitoring the day before the shooting. the department of juvenile services admits he cut off his gps bracelet, but could not be found in time to prevent the tragedy. >> there is a need to improve what we do to intervene in the lives of that risk used. >> the governor has asked for review of djs, but says the department has made positive strides. >> we have deployed, and i think we're a leader in the nation when it comes to using gps on young adult -- i

delia goncalves is live outside the barn in carney with reactions tonight. delia? >> reporter: folks here at the barn were quite honest about their feelings when they talk to us about steve mcnair's death and what we have learned so far about his life and the affair. still, many of them agree that even his personal mistakes simply cannot overshadow his professional success. >> look at that! you don't think it means something to him? >> reporter: it was his short but memorable stint in baltimore that has ravens fans remembering steve mcnair. >> he was a great football player. and i liked him. i really liked him when he was with us. >> reporter: and even those who cheer for another team sing his praises. >> he was a great quarterback, one of the toughest guys to play the game. >> reporter: steve mcnair was shot and killed last week. plus say his 20-year-old girlfriend pulled the trigger, then turned the gun on himself. >> i think if he had been faithful to his wife, he would still be alive today. >> regardless of his situation and what he was doing, it may not have b

delia goncalves joins us now live from the scene where the community is rallying to bring it back. delia? >> reporter: and mary, at this late hour, crews are just finishing cleaning and boarding up after today's restaurant fire, the suburban house, or sh as it was known is famous for its matzoh ball soup and family atmosphere, and just the fact that it's been here so long. now it's just boarded up. charred remains are inside of what many say is a staple they can't imagine living without. the fire was knocked out quickly, but devastated the suburban house, and the people who called it home. >> very painful. you never really think of anything like this. >> it's terrible! it's a staple. how can -- wow. >> it's just a sad day. >> so god bless and pray for the best. >> reporter: 15-year employee rose stephan was inside the restaurant when firefighters say someone heard a pop coming from the storage room. and then: >> smelled a little bit of smoke. before we knew it, the place was filling up. >> reporter: she called the fire department and helped evacuate the other 44 customers and employ

delia goncalves is live at county police headquarters with more on the search for the culprits. terry? >> reporter: police are still at this hour looking for the suspects. and they say they have very few leads to go on. in the meantime, clergy members are taking a second look at their security systems. >> it's a shame. >> there is not much more to say when dealing with the burglar, except perhaps this. >> it shows you how smart they are, to be honest as far as burglary goes, because this is not much in a church. that's for sure. >> in fact, police say the culprit or culprits didn't make off with much. the most that was stolen was a couple of hundred dollars. >> they would have done better coming and asking than trying to come into the church. >> reporter: on warren road and cockeysville says the burglar broke through a church office window, ransacked the place, and took off with a safe that only held documents. it's troubling, though, when a criminal targets a place of worship. >> other disheartening thing for us is we do a lot to help out people in the community. when people ha

delia goncalves tells us where the new units are headed. >> reporter: it was a bloody weekend in baltimore that made national headlines. 21 people shot, including 12 here at this memorial backyard barbecue. a pregnant woman, a 2-year-old, and an east side safe streets community organizer among the victims. >> people have to say are they going to accept this and allow this to happen, or are they going to speak up and start turning people in. >> reporter: a call for the mayor from the community to step up. now a promise from police. 15 more officers heading primarily to the eastern district, patrolling the very streets where gunshots claimed the lives of two people this weekend, including this young mother, shot 10 times. >> it's much needed. >> reporter: the commissioner says the officers will be assigned foot patrol. >> that way the police can get a -- heal the relationship with the neighborhood. >> see more officer in the car. >> it has been really terrible. around here. and i think we need more police officers. >> if they go to the right places, i think that's better, and not focusing on

abc 2 news delia goncalves is live at the archdiocese headquarters with more on this. >> reporter: after many attempts to save the school, the archdiocese is forced to shut down towson catholic. they intended to release this news tomorrow but word already leaked out forcing them to break the news today. they are blaming the economy, and because of it enrollment was down 81 students to a total of 163. the unprecedented drop in enrollment came as student population was already down, and the school was in a budget deficit of more than $650,000. towson catholic is the oldest and one of the few parish coed high schools in the area. and at $9,500 a year, offered tuition at a reduced cost, and in some cases 2/3 lower than most other schools. we're told this afternoon that 20 staff members and teachers will be meeting tomorrow with human resource and hopes to find them other types of employment solely in the summer. students will have a meeting we're told next week to discuss their option of heading to another school within the parish. we're told that the towson catholic stude
