amy: for more, congressmember-elect delia ramirez joins us now from chicago. welcome to democracy now! and congratulations. delia: thank you. good morning. honored to be here. amy: you talked about people sending themselves to every level of elected office, and you, the first latina to be elected to congress. talk about who you represent and what you feel are the key issues that you want to represent in congress. delia: when i announced on december 8 one year ago that we were running for congress, i was delivered about making it we. my name is on the ballot in november. in june, i was taking the voice is, the souls, the mind of the people asked me to run. these are people who are struggling paying for their childcare. these are people that i helped house years ago when i used to run homeless shelters. these are the same people i've been working with and building with, progressives and the statehouse, state senate. these are people who have been fighting every single day to create affordable housing so that people can have families -- families can have stable ho

also making history, delia ramirez.l district means she will serve as the states first latino member of congress and representative elect. ramirez is joining me now. hey, congratulations! how incredible is this? wow, couple days in, right? >> couple days in, i'm still pinching myself a little. it is surreal. but i'm incredibly honored and so excited to be serving as the first latina in illinois, but the entire midwest. >> it's really incredible, and i can't believe it's taken this long. i do know that you're currently in washington, from what i understand. already had meetings with the congressional progressive caucus. we don't necessarily know who's going to have the majority in the house as of yet. dems could still very much have majority, but we don't know. i know chair jayapal is saying it's going to be the most progressive, as she says, democratic caucus in decades. how are you all planning for either outcome? whether dems are in control of the house or republicans. >> yeah, we actually had a presser just a few min

in illinois, democrat delia ramirez is running in the newly redrawn 3rd district house.she is a progressive state representative and the daughter of guatemalan immigrants. and in pittsburgh, pennsylvania, summer lee, a member of the democratic socialists of america, is running on the democratic ticket to replace the retiring longtime congressman democrat mike doyle. the race has confused many voters because lee's republican opponent has the same name as the democratic lawmaker who is retiring, mike doyle. and his latest ad doesn't say he is republican that says "a name you can trust." aipac, the american israel public affairs committee, has spent millions of dollars trying trying to defeat summer lee. the group's political action committee, the united democracy project, spent close to $3 million during the primary against lee and has now spent over $680,000 during the general election on television ads and mailings to attack her. over the weekend, summer lee held a major rally in pittsburgh to get out the vote. >> knocking on the door and someone asks you, what about pub

amy: we will be joined by delia ramirez, the congressman-elect from illinois. she is the first latina congresswoman to represent illinois. on that issue of the working party line, how many more votes did you get this time and what does that mean? so what if you vote for a democrat on the democratic party line or on the working families line? what kind of power does that give you? >> progressives across the state really stepped up to defeat the far right. we knew what was on the line. we knew the state of extremists ke lee zeldin. what we are telling voters is you can work to defeat the far right -- from the visn of new york state you want. [indiscernible] telling workers, particular and people, immigrants, those who the democratic already are maybe not chasing their votes, if you want universal health care in new york, and oversoul childcare, if you believe we should make the wealthy pay their fair share with ao in texas, vote on the working family parties line. alexandria ocasio-cortez saying that that democrats need working people to deliver on those big init

several young progressives were just voted into office like greg kasar, summer lee, pennsylvania, delia ramirez. rob smith is with us. what do you think about this , socialism and voice gaining strength in the house of representatives? >> this is what i think, stuart obviously there's more young socialists getting into the house of representatives but i think that socialism has peaked. i think that that entire far left movement has really peaked and so look at what's going on right now, and the interesting thing about watching alexandria ocasio-cortez over the last couple years is seeing how thoroughly she's been both absorbed into the swamp and neutralized by the traditional elements of the democrat party and so all of these squad members got re-elected in deep blue districts. they aren't competitive districts. these people will continue to be re-elected and if anybody is watching we need to stop dumping millions of dollars into candidates that are running against these people in these districts. it's unwinnable. you know, there's more money to be spent elsewhere, so i don't think that these y
