does dell meet that standard? >> not for me. i like dell.nk it's solid but everything that goes into the yahoo evaluation, it's just on an evaluation level. trading at a single digit multiple forever sitting on a lot of cash and starting to see some growth return to the search side of the business. that is impressive. >> dell is a commodity business pure and simple. >> they have done an excellent job at diversifying and doing what hewlett-packard has not been able to do. they've made some smart acquisitions and i think folks have kind of fallen asleep with dell and placed dell in the same valuation trap that they've got hewlett-packard in. the story is completely fundamentally different. >> good stuff. you have unusual activity you've been watching as well. >> this plays along with what keith banks was talking about from u.s. trust earlier when he was talking about some of the materials. also mentioned china and latin america as areas where he thinks there is tremendous growth. talked about some bottoming in china perhaps. that is why i look

jackie deangelis is breaking can down dell's numbers for us. >> well, dell reported third quarter earningsof 39 cents a share on revenue of 13.72 billion. missing analysts expectations slightly on both the top and the bottom line. in terms of the guidance, the company expects sequential revenue growth of 2% to 5% backing its projection for the full year earnings of $1.70. on on the conference call, analysts got a little bit more color. dell said it does expect the global macroeconomic environment to remain challenging especially on the consumer side. regionally, the emerging markets which have traditionally been robust have also slowed a bit. management said that while they are focusing on cost reduction in order to stay competitive, they're also sticking to their focus on the mid to high value part of the business, not chasing the low end consumer space. and lastly, in the tablet space, the focus has been on on the commercial side. they see a profit stream there, they think that they can compete. tablets of course also offer a lifecycle with services and other add-on oadd-ons. >> dell sha

now low on dell. now down more than 7% and the bloodshed is being felt with hewlett packard down 2.4% as well. everything is going against them right now. tough competition from apple and others. and people just aren't using pcs as much. >> when you get that kind of decline in pcs and even the emerging market numbers were terrible. they've got server business that had been their hope. i struggle for a reason to own dell other than the fact that they have a good billion sheet. i think that time is passing them by. one of the things that is so hard for people to grasp is that there will be a name like dell and they'll say that was always a great trader, great investment. dell is one of the stocks that during the '90s would double and double. remember, bunncr reinvented its and honeywell reinvented itself. >> so did ibm. >> i'm just saying that when you see companies just because you know that they have a big brand name, whether they are nokia, which is trying to reinvent itself or rimm, don't think that

dell's troubles hit hewlett packard shares too.both habo sven pressure building on their traditional desktop computer business. h.p.q. shares fell 1.8%, closing at more than a decade low. hewlett updates shareholders tuesday with its quarterly results. one bright spot in pre-holiday retailing looks to be video games. activision and microsoft have each released update versions of best-sellers and they have become best sellers themselves. a s jumped 4.6% thanks to its "call of dut: black ops 2" game selling $500 million in its first day. microsoft's "halo-4" game also has seen strong demand in its first week of sales. video games are a relatively small portion of microsoft's business. shares were down a half percent. video game retailer game stop looks to be an early winner of video game demand. shares jumped 4.3% closing at a new 52 week high. this led the consumer sector today. meantime, best buy is waiting to hear from founder richard schulze about whether or not he will make a buy-out offer. his 60 day period to look at its books
