delta had been talking about making 6 to 7 bucks a share. that the company cut its free cash flow forecast from 3 billion to 2 billion. that's terrible. higher fuel and maintenance costs. if delta was going to cut its full year growth and maintenance numbers they -- when they preannounced to the down side last month better just to rip off the band-aid. what do we do? despite the guide down a lot of what i saw from delta actually makes me feel more sanguine about travel rather than an end to the travel boom we might just be experiencing some turbulence. of course this doesn't apply to the entire industry. we think that low-cost carriers are going to struggle. but delta's going increasingly high-end. that business is holding up fine. how about the cost side of the equation? well, management's done a good job of cutting costs that they can control. the airlines are still hostage to oil prices and with another war in the middle east it's hard to argue that fuel costs are going to come down too much from these levels. here's the bottom line. the

is delta a conglomerate?ne, a card business, it's got a really big maintenance business. you put all of this together. is the whole fit logical and can i think of delta as an employee center. are you an airline or are you just an airline. ed: we are in airline but we also appreciate the fact the airline business has a lot of volatility to it. what we've been after is trying to find a more diversified strain of earnings -- a string of earnings for our investment base, for employees and customers so we can ride through these challenging turbulent times but we inevitably have seen and will continue to see. with the credit card revenues being a part of it. in terms of third-party servicing, the work we are doing trying to control fuel. people think about the airlines is having a lot of factors outside. we have taken a view at delta we control much more and focus on things we can control as compared to things we can control. you are seeing i wouldn't call it a conglomerate but you are seeing an airline taking cont

shares of delta down 2% after they revised down.they see a turn around in urs comp sales, and walgreens gaining 6%. target also slightly higher after an upgrade to buy. they're bullish on improving traffic and some new products. let's take a deeper dive, starting with phil lebeau. and kim forest joins with us her trades today. she's sticking with names that create consumer delight over and over again. and with less than three months to go until christmas, courtney reagan, we'll see what we can glean from holiday hiring trends. phil, what did we learn today? >> well, kelly, what we learned is that delta is still very optimistic about where they are seeing the consumer as we head towards the end of the year. let's talk first about this narrowing of the guidance in terms of full-year earnings expectations and free cash flow. delta did narrow its expectation after increasing it. now expected to earn between $6 and $6.25 per year. so a little bit of a narrowing there. $2 billion for the full year, was expecting to bring in $3 billion. th

through delta, we highlight 55% of revenues are from other services such as their delta tech ops networkhave that is differentiated and helps lower maintenance cost. they have the loyalty program with amex as well so they have other revenue streams and drive revenues from premium customers so they try to hedge it in that way rather than direct. >> can we finish on loyalty programs? changes at delta, how are those changes working out? >> i say i wish i could use a skymiles club because i never have time, i'm consulate running around. and fashion is kind of taking a step back saying we will revisit the changes because of the feedback they have gotten but making it more difficult to earn those points given they have such a high loyal customer base. i think they do have a reliable on-time network and part of that comes from their of her -- other revenue streams. >> i will work out if they lose customers because the change they've made. to think they might. -- might? >> i don't think so because they will get me to where i need to go so it is ok for me and they have such a loyal customer base.

so, how can delta get its wings back, tim? >> well, boy, there's a few puns in there. >> a lot of great writers on this show. >> i think delta really just needs to hold the line on discipline in terms of capacity and keeping costs in line. ed's done a great job here. he also -- he listens to his employees. he listens to his customers. and i think delta's made some difficult adjustments at times when it seemed the right choice for the business and the corporate culture was something else, but delta should trade at a premium. it, in fact, relative to some of the big three, if you call it that, it does. it's got the best balance sheet of the bounce and there's pricing power in the front of the bus and transcontinental, and business travel is happening. so, it's a frustrating time for airlines because they're trading correlated to oil prices. i think they are the greatest trading stocks in the world. >> yeah, he did do a mea culpa on the changes in the rewards program. people are very unhappy. >> see if they can pull that chart up

delta >>> delta airlines is getting ready to report quarterly results.beau. >> becky, the company earning $2.03 a share. above estimates of $1.95. those estimates have come down since september 1st. the street was expecting leaver eps. delta did beat with $2.03 for the quarter. revenue in line at $14.55 billion. the numbers within the numbers are operating in the third quarter of 13.5%. passenger per seat mile down 1.5% in the quarter. cost per seat mile up 1.3% in the third quarter. non-fuel cost below estimates. jet fuel costs down 21% in the third quarter. they got 11 cent benefit in the third quarter from the trainer facility that they own. that is one reason why the jet fuel costs are coming in down 21% year over year. now guidance. fourth quarter eps of $1.05. revenue expected to be up 9%. street expecting 10.6%. they were expecting robust domestic and international travel in the fourth quarter. they are not changing dguidance in terms of bookings and consumer. they are, however, expecting fuel costs to increase. $290 to $320 a gallon. that compare

earnings season is here with delta getting estimates that the stock is down in the carrier is trimmingt because of rising fuel prices and larger aircraft maintenance costs. let us get to it with brooke sutherland. are we surprised by this, what is your takeaways? brooke: delta gave a heads up that they were expecting pressure for rising fuel costs and you can look at what is happening in the oil market. the bigger issue was maintenance costs. we have had a variety of supply chain issues affecting the airlines' ability to update fleets. but the bigger kuester -- question for investors is what does the demand picture look like once we get past the summer season? delta is in a better position because it has a robust international business and also has more of a premium product which helps protect it from some of the pressure we have seen with jetblue and spirit. guy: on the grapevine i hear that corporate is not coming back in a meaningful way. what does that mean? brooke: i think you are right on that. i was listening to the earnings call and they were reining in some of their travel spe
