today a judge sentenced delvin barnes to 35 years in prison. rosemary connors was in the courtroom this afternoon. rosemary, you also heard from the victim herself for the very first time. everyone wondering how she's doing. >> reporter: jacqueline, she's doing all right. she was soft-spoken, but clearly described the impact this ordeal has had on her life. she suffers from ptsd and has flashbacks of being kidnapped. they told the judge that when the 38-year-old forced her into the trunk of his car, she thought, this is it, i'm going to die. >> the idea that she was rescued alive with minor injuries was a miracle. >> reporter: it was difficult for the fbi and philadelphia police not to think the worst after seeing the surveillance video of the victim struggling with her attacker, who snatched her right off the sidewalk and stuffed her into his trunk. delvin barnes cried in court this afternoon and told the judge he's sorry from the bottom of his heart for kidnapping the young woman from her germantown neighborhood in 2014. he said he was ashame

the young woman from germantown told the judge today that when delvin barnes forced her into the trunk of his car in november of 2014, she thought she was going to die. it was fast-moving law enforcement that tracked down barnes and his victim in maryland. federal prosecutors also credit the woman with saving her own life. >> thinking constantly about how she would be rescued, the information that she would give to the law enforcement pursuing her in trying to locate her, such as requiring making him use her atm card at a machine that would have a camera. >> reporter: these images quickly circulated and led to barnes' capture. in court today he cried and told the judge he hoped to make good out of a bad situation from the halls of confinement. despite the terrifying experience of being snatched from the sidewalk in her own neighborhood, the victim stayed calm. that kept her attacker calm. >> she is very compassionate. she's thinking on her feet, thinking about her family, thinking about her will to live, her will to survive. >> reporter: this was the first time the victim saw 38-year-o

the kidnapper delvin barnes was arrest. he admitted he sexually exploited his captive, it was an act of desperation following a botched robbery. >> he intended the abduction because he had zip ties in his car and forced her into the trunk. that was his explanation as to how this started. the result was a forcibly abduction of a young woman off the street. >> he received a plea deal of 35 years in prison and will be well into his 70s when he is released. barnes had a violence pastp law enforcement credits the victim with keeping herself alive, convincing barnes to using an atm where cameras recorded him. >> he got him comfortable with her and that way he did not harm her. she made him care about her. >> the victim says she is satisfied with the plea deal of 35 years, the judge in this case. curtis joiner was vexed that this guy would ever get out of jail but barnes actually sobbed when he spoke in court that barnes was convicted nine times prior to the kidnapping and was just out of prison after a lengthy stay in that prison
