demings for five minutes. >> thank you so much mister chairman. thank you to our witnesses.to all of us for being here today. i have to say, as i sit here as a former police officer and police chief this is demings one of the strangest discussions. it's interesting that we are not having the discussion in a more proactive away. i even suggested earlier, as we talked about holding the court accountable, it was suggested that it was an effort to try to intimidate the court. that is the strangest -- that is pretty strange. see, i have always operated under a belief that everybody counts. that everybody is accountable. you know, growing up in this wonderful country that we have enjoyed i admired the supreme court since i was a child. no one could have ever made me believe that they could be compromised. when i don't think -- any of us can sit here and say that the approval rating that has plummeted is something that we can't ignore. i think about some of the landmark decisions, certainly as a person growing up in florida and other law enforcement officer, miranda versus arizona.

i actually worked with sheriff val demings husband on the sheriff's association were would have certified law enforcement officers who go through a specific gun safety, school safety course just like the sros go through and put these individuals in our schools, former and current militarily and law enforcement that can respond to these type of incidents. what mr. lott's research has shown and this is from today, 94% of mass shootings between 1950 and 2019 occurred in gun free zones. that is a fact. sandy hook's gun free zone, pulls a club was a gun free zone. parkland was. the shooting we had in florida was a gun free zone. uvalde was a gun free zone. regardless of we will never get people people out of this world and regardless of what tool they are using to accomplish the people they intend on a, wishing, by not having somebody there who is properly trained, who was armed to be able to respond these types of atrocities is what is putting all of our children in these horrible situations. i fought hard to get that changed in florida and i believe it that bill would have been passed before
