so in 2016 -- first of all, the folks that are elected to the democratic national committee, every state has a handful of spots on the dnc. these are pretty coveted seats. virginia has five elected representatives to the democratic national committee. these are infamous superdelegate positions. when i decided to run for the position in 2016, most of my very early supporters came from my friends, millennials, progressives. i didn't really have the -- the strongest supporters came from that community as opposed to my own community. it's difficult. when folks put themselves out there, people from our community, when we step up to run for office, it's not easy. it really isn't. when we are talking about running for office during this administration, administration that again on a day to day basis is demonizing our community, is attacking us. you know, folks like everybody in this room that is working on issues that were trying to fight for our communities, trying to defend our rights and liberties and individuals running for our community are the best people that will be able to fight for us
