democrats, 91% increase. so you kind of look at all this and you remember the old tv show lost in space, and remember that robot that was like danger will robinson. these are danger things. so we're finish would the wave. let's talk about the wall. there are things that help protect republican majorities and in the house specifically, democrats need a 23-seat net gain to get a majority in the house of representatives. but there are two things that help protect republicans. and one is where congressional district boundaries are drawn. keep in mind it's done once every decade, and democrats had that devastating republican great year in 2010, gooives lieutenant governor, and state legislators republicans were suddenly able to draw the maps in most of the states, and republicans had the opportunity to do to democrats what democrats had done to republicans in so many decades on redistricting, and they did. and modern technology you could actually do it even better than you used to be able to do it. so we've got --

democrats did pretty well. they were behind in the governorship significantly going into this election. we knew they were going to pick inthree seats and they did, illinois, new mexico and michigan. we also knew the republicans going to gain a set back from a independent in alaska. happened as well. we were focusing on eight competitive gubernatorial races. of those eight, it turns out that the republicans retained four and also lost four. so first, four they lost. democrats did beat scott walker wisconsin. they won a race against a candidate who is very close to kobach, in kansas. they won in nevada, in maine. holds,r key republican one is still to be absolutely determined, but florida, of hold., was very large ohio, where republicans performed very well. the state, nots just in the governor's race, very well in all the other state they swept. georgia is still technically not called. i think there is a likelihood int republicans will win that state. there are votes out there, my analysis is it's probably not a

democrats have to wait.really interesting to see what these candidates were trying to do even if they fell short. what lessons they may of learned for the future. >> yes, it's heartbreaking you had o'rourke making that race competitive. a senate race we didn't think would be competitive. it's been 25rs since a democrat has won state wide in texas. you had gillum doing the same and stac abrams in georgia. they were energizing the base. florida specifically it's complicated. it's like five states one. it's not a easy state to break through. the demographics are changing. two years ago donald trump won by the same percentage point of desantos. it's going to take som time. i think what democrats have learned this time around is that it good to have authenticeal candidates talking about the issue, and not to run away from that at the end of the day this was a midterm election. the amount of people thashowed up for democrats. it's presidential numbers, close to presidential numbers. >> should be proud of. that. ch

there's 42 democrats and 46 democrats, if you just put the safe seats aside.are really only looking at 12 seats tonight. of these 12, let's just allocate them. let's assume nelson wins in florida and that donnelly wins in indiana, mccaskill in missouri and then montana for tester, new jersey, menendez, north dakota for heitkamp. then all democrats have to do if they hold on to all of those incumbents, which is a tall order, if all they have to do is pick off two other seats. arizona, let's say sinema has a good nights, then the democrats can take control of the senate. everything relies on the democratic incumbents winning tonight. on the other hand, if you look at the same map and then you think about what the republicans have to do, well, all they really need to do -- let's assume they win mississippi and texas and tennessee, those are very traditionally republican seats. who knows will happen tonight but they're traditionally. all they have to do then is win nevada, that's it, and then they control the senate. so it is much tougher to be a democrat tonight

when they emerged all their data january through august, 63 percent of democrat democrats, but only 51 percent of republicans said it was a nine or attend that is a democratic advantage on that would scare the heck out of you and the republican nationald committee did a national poll it was bad news but they leaked it for a good reason they found most republicans and conservatives and trump voters did not think their majority was in danger so the president said there was a red wave and then you had the kavanaugh fight in september there is a tendency in the last month with partisans to come home in other words, for democrats who may have strayed or not focused they return to the polls and republicans return so some of this would have happened anyway but kavanaugh had an incredibly galvanizing effect. the fight to me was color enhancement the reds better and the blues were there wasn't a lot of people switching sides and over in the senate being fought in red america that had really bad consequences for democratic candidates. but over in the house of suburban america where president tru

jacky rosen a democrat, winds. in arizona, kristin sinema, she is one of the first atheists to be elected -- not religious to be elected. she wins in arizona. o'rourke does not win but very competitive in texas. the underreported part of what happened in florida, republicans feel good about florida, but the hispanic vote was highly energized in florida. what happened in florida, it is the voter that just we were talking about. the white, catholic voter who was a reagan democrat. guess where they are all moving, florida. the hispanic vote and population is growing in florida, but so is the population of white retirees who are republicans. democrats are struggling with that dynamic, even as they're getting the democratic vote out in florida. if you think about florida, texas, arizona, california, nevada. democrats have to feel good about the hispanic, religious vote, because they are coming out. president trump going after the caravan, the border wall, it has a benefit politically now. it kept them the senate in some

cbs is still calling this a toss-up with democrats optimistic about a democratic pickup in this stase statewith jacky rosen, against the current senator dean heller. we're going to be watching nevada very, very closely. let's check back in the lone star state because this has been bouncing back and forth as the tally comes in. cbs news has it leaning republican, but we continue to watch this race very closely tonight with just now 76% of the vote in. so lots more to say about texas. jeff glor is with anthony salvanto at the cbs news decision desk. jeff. >> glor: i have burrod my way into the decision desk here, norah, which is a fascinating place to be right now. let's talk about florida in particular. 99% of the vote in. but neither of the big races, the senate race and the governor's races in florida have been called. why? >> 99% of what we think the vote will be, if we're looking at this in real time, we've got this razor-tight race and we're still not exactly sure how many votes are still outstanding in key democratic areas -- broward county, miami-dade, et cetera. 99 hillsborough

democrats weren't even close. seven points, something like that. democrats lost in 2016. here they won for -- ran pretty well here. those are some things that are worth looking at here. i think the presidential election, the campaign starts today. there will be people jumping in immediately. fieldk it's going to be a that will be of roughly the same size as the republican field was back in 2016. it will have some interesting dynamics to it. we will see things that we've never had before. for example, we had african-americans run for democratic nominations before. jesse jackson ran twice. to have for well-funded, organized, prominent african-americans running, like, harris or cory booker, deval patrick -- that's a new and different dynamic here. i think it's a mistake to think of the democratic nomination fight like ncaa basketball brackets. it's not that simple and that's not the way it is. it is a way to structure thinking. we have had women run for democratic nominations before. 4, in going to have 2, 3, addition to elizabeth warren almost certainly going to run. possib
