the nypd meanwhile said it is ready for the demonstration. in a statement the nypd says quoting, again new york city is one of the safest large cities in america. we will deal with planned and unplanned demonstrations on a regular basis and support the right people to demonstrate and voice their first amend rights as long as they are peaceful and lawful. in december you might recall there were massive protests that did take place here in new york city. after a grand jury failed to indict a white policeman in connection with the death of a black man that they were trying to arrest. during protests over the death of eric gardner, demonstrators shut down key roadways and bridges in the city. there were in excess of 300 arrests. but to keep that in perspective, the eric garner incident took place here in new york city. the demonstration expected to take place in the next few hours is in solidarity with the people of baltimore. and over the last few days a number of cities have seen demonstrations taking place to people of baltimore. in just the l

hundreds of demonstrators coming together. they were there to express sadness and outrage over the events in baltimore. police were prepared for a large group to gather there, but they started the evening warning people over a loudspeaker that if they obstructed the sidewalks or got into the streets, arrests would be made for disorderly conduct. when the people moved out, police inntercepted them and made arrests. they walked into traffic and more people were arrested and into times square where police made arrests. tensions running high as the crowds were showing support for baltimore and justice for freddie gray. a lot of the times following in a line of mopeds and motorcycles. john. >> alexandra field on the streets of new york. a new night of protests in ferguson missouri. dozens marching down west flourissant avenue. about 500 peaceful protesters gathered in washington, d.c. they were playing music and chanting all night, all day. we're going to fight for freddie gray. that crowd disbursed after preaching the white house.

we are looking to the demonstrators seeing people with signs. quite a few of the people in the background are media as well. some of the people that you are looking at are activists and demonstrators, a few are the media. we are looking to the line. you see to the bottom third of the screen these are the police officers. there are about 3,000 law enforcement and national guards men called out to assist. city of baltimore asked for their assistance and they have come. federal forces local communities from around maryland contributed police force to this effort to keep things contained as the curfew gets under way. it's 20 minutes since the curfew took effect. clearly the people of baltimore understood that this is the hour this was supposed to happen in, and they were supposed to go home according to city leaders. at 10 o'clock eastern. they did not do that. adam are you seeing any indication that the agitators, or there's any agitation moving towards the police line? >> no. in fact the distance between the police has grown. there's one woman in

but this is a protest, a demonstration and police say they hope it is a peaceful demonstration, the likesf which we're seeing here for a full week. but the most interesting piece of information there was we began to see them trying to reduce the expectations on this report that will be turned over to the state's attorney on friday. there are a lot of people here in this city -- i know you've been talking to them -- who have this notion that they're going to find out a whole bunch of information all at once on friday and maybe even find out if there will be officers charged. we were just talking about that. this officer made clear that that is not likely at all. it's much more likely to find out nothing on friday. he simply said they're going to turn over this information and there's a great need to keep much of this information secret. he didn't i suppose, rule out the possibility that the state's attorney can make some of it public. but evan perez was saying to me earlier today, they are talking behind the scenes right now to try to figure out a way to reduce these expectations by friday

there are a lot of demonstrations on the streets. you're seeing one right there. a large crowd moving peacefully through the streets. i actually encountered that crowd in traffic just a short time ago, and i can tell you, they are actually directing traffic themselves. the protesters are out in front of that protest. i didn't actually see any police at the front of the protest. and they were actually stopping cars directing traffic. it was a very orderly protest, thousands of people multiracial, peaceful marching through the streets, accompanied by major police and national guard presence. a major protest, as well in new york. this is what the crowds look like tonight in and around in union square where police have been making a number of arrests. in addition we have just talked to a person with intimate knowledge of the arrest of freddie gray. we're going to have that interview a little bit later on. this is the first time we have heard the account from one of the police officers about what that police officer believes may have happened to freddie gray or at leas
