the stories arose during the time of world war ii and there is a lot of competition in the denim world and the company needed a powerful origin story about the jeans. they made assumptions based on what they had and we were left with 1850 clipper ships, ribbed pockets, denim from france. although i have to say my favorite story about the origin of the company was the london sunday times, which said the company had been founded by claude levi-strauss, the french anthropologist. [laughter] my personal favorite. it took my entire time, mostly years to track down the story because there were no records and i really did have to travel to find this story. and in between my regular duties, that is what i would do, ferret out information about this man. so i found is actually a person who was so much more interesting than the mythology. he was sort of a cardboard cutout. even here in our town, san francisco, he was this cardboard cutout. when i found a person more interesting, more complicated than anybody i could have imagined. let's start with his beginning. he was born loub strauss figure 2
