dennis ross is with us, ambassador. he worked to try to bring an israeli/palestinian agreement over.years when he bed in the u.s. government. dennis, let me get your reaction to what the president just said. i understand you believe that there could be some potential some strategic vision that the president has to advance the peace process with what he just said. >> well, i agree that we haven't heard what that strategic vision is. we didn't hear new ideas from that standpoint. but i wouldn't undersell the significance of saying that nothing has been prejudged. there is not, in fact, any effort here to say this is what jerusalem is now going to look like. in effect, what he's saying is i'm recognizing what is a fact. now, i also recognize that if we are going to have peace, we're going to have to deal with the needs of other sides as well. aaron is right he didn't spell out what the needs or the claims of the other side were, but by the same token, he's empathizing he's not recognizing a particular part of jerusalem as i

joining us now, dennis ross, served as middle east adviser to multiple administrations, now at the washingtononal responsibility, are these mutually is elusive, advancing these mutually is elusive, advancing the peace process and moving the embassy to jerusalem. not necessarily but it depends upon how it is done, if it is done as though it is done, if it is done as though it is done, if it is done as though it isa it is done, if it is done as though it is a move that will be made over time, numberone, if it is a move that will be made over time, number one, if it is done in a way that the president says clearly, this is not prejudging the final status of the city, that still must be negotiated, the ancient boundaries, palestinian claims, all that must be resolved in negotiations. if he frames the issue that way, we can manage it then. we'll have to see what he says when he makes the announcement but there are concerns among palestinians that this looks like president trump has accepted the israelis position on one of the key final status issues. there is no issue more sensitive or provocative

i want to point out, neil, in 1948, this is part of our history of the united states, dennis ross spokehe book he did a couple years ago, in 1948 the state department advised president truman not to recognize the state of israel. about 600,000 jews and tens of millions of arabs were more important, the air rashes were more important. we can't antagonize them. it was truman on his own who did what he thought was right and recognized the state of israel. and today the president of the united states making, you know, he made a commitment. you know, people talk about this, well, everybody made commitments. they didn't really mean it. really? is that what our politicians are all about? we promise things knowing full well that we're not going to fulfill those promises, whether it was clinton, whether it was bush, whether it was obama? i mean the president of the united states, let us give him credit today, democrats, republicans, he is doing the right thing. he is following the law and we should not be intimidated by our enemies and by those who say, you know, three days of rage. by the way,
