all right, next up, we have the director of the department of public health dr. grant cull fax with an update of what's happening in the city's public health department and hopefully more to come fairly soon. >> good morning, everybody. thank you mayor. it's great to be here as we celebrate san francisco moving to the orange tier. i'm proud of how we have come forward and our commitment the community has shown as we dealt with this unprecedented year. i have good news to share with you today our hospital census is the lowest it's been in four months. with just 35 patients in the hospital due to covid-19. even more good news we are averaging just 31 cases of covid-19 a day. that compares to 374 cases better day in the last winter surge. as it mayor said we are making great progress and putting 3 highly effective and safe vaccines into arms as quickly as possible. we are currently at a daily average of 8,600 vaccinations per day. as it mayor said we can get up to 25,000 per day. we don't have enough vaccine. we are at the point in this marathon with a few more miles

of the department he would lead. in normal times, hhs and its agencies provided health service to nearly 100 million people. those agencies affect the lives of many, many more on a daily basis. that pandemic has raised the salience of the department. the department's leadership, will continue to play a key role in bring us out of this public health emergency. similarly, medicare and medicaid are providing essential health care to patients with suffered is partially from the pandemic. looking to the future, secretary, the deputy secretary and the cms admits ritter must carefully evaluate how best to use resources available to them to promote health for citizens. we must do so carefully, constructively, and critically. two months ago, i outlined several issues in health care space or intend to focus my efforts as ricky member. including fostering innovation to the approved patient care and make our health care system more efficient. the covid-19 pandemic has threatened americans physical and economic health. it has also reinforced the value of innovation and provided an opportunity to test changes that foster

the illinois department of department of health and staff, from a local health department, evaluated a covid-19 outbreak associated with a bar in a rural area of illinois. this bar accommodates about 100 people and held an opening event indoors in february. while table spacing and social distancing and masking is encouraged, people said it was inconsistent and six feet of distance was not maintained. the evaluation found 46 covid-19 cases linked to this event. of those, 26 were patrons and three bar staff. 17 secondary cases among contacts of people who attended the opening and got covid-19. 12 household contacts. three were long-term care facility contacts. and two were school-related contacts. transmission associated with this opening event also resulted in eight households with infections, a school closure affecting 650 children, and the hospitalization of a long-term care facility resident. as we work to get more people vaccinated and as communities and businesses begin to reopen, these findings underscore the vast impact of a single event, affecting communities, schools, families

the kansas city department of health continued to downplay the risks until they couldn't any longer. finally on october 7th, it was clear that there was a major health emergency taking place and they closed the schools, they closed churches, theaters and banned public gatherings of any group larger than 20. that figure is important to notice. that meant you could keep some things open too. you could keep saloons and dance halls as long as you didn't have more than 20 people in a given space. you could keep those open and they did. unfortunately there was some infighting among the public health folks here in kansas city. shortly after they put these restrictions in place, they were removed. of course, influenza worsened and very quickly they had to restore these -- excuse me, reimpose these restrictions and this time they were a little bit tighter. dances, parties, weddings, funerals, business hours were shortened, all known cases of influence were required to be quarantined. and citizens strained under these restrictions for a full month. hard to picture doing that today, right? scho
