[music] a little over 7 years ago i was sleeping underneath of a bridge on the streets for 19 years eating out of a trash can, going in and out of correctional and mental health systems. i racked up 83 arrest and 66 convictions all due to my substance abuse because i was trying to cope with the trauma that had happened in my life. and i would go in and out of prison, and they would say, "this is how you're going to spend the rest of your life, or you're going to die in the streets." once i was able to go to a program where my trauma was addressed, the tamar children program, my trauma was identified, addressed, and treated. i was able to change my belief system from "i am nothing" to "i am somebody," and i can be anything i want in this world. see, when my belief system changed, my thought process changed. and i started to make the best decisions based on me believing that i was worth a better life. dr. harris, let's focus a little bit on issues of trauma for children and youth. you've

[music playing] the recovery program at rutgers is a unique program that includes housing for students. right now in new brunswick, we can hold 38 students and in newark we can hold 8 students. the housing in new brunswick has been around since 1988. the recovery program itself started around 1983 under lisa laitman. our program and the recovery house we describe as not a treatment program-this isn't like going to rehab. what the recovery house is is a residence hall which supports people in recovery. students have to be sober at least 90 days to get in. you know, i would prefer a longer time than that. but they made a commitment to recovery and they're in 12-step programs. whether they go to aa or na, it doesn't matter, but they need to go to one or the other a few times a week and have a sponsor. i am devin fox. i am a person who is in long-term recovery. what that means for me is that i haven't used a drink or a drug in over 3 years. and recovery has really provided me with a life
