the department of health and human services says more than 2,500 children are currently hospitalized 9 nationwide. pediatrician dr. brian kornreich in virginia says he's never seen anything like this. >> it's never been this crazy, never been this busy. it's exhausting all of us, and our biggest concern, of course, is that sick kids aren't getting the care they need. >> reporter: steve lance and his wife are vaccinated. he says his family of four caught covid after his kids recently returned to school where he suspects his third grade son picked up the virus, despite the school making masks mandatory. >> it was that first week with lots of contact with other kids. it's one of those things. you send your child to school. they're in a classroom but they're not just in contact with everyone in the classroom, they're in contact with everyone that those classmates have come in contact with. >> reporter: according to the cdc, new data shows that unvaccinated people are ten times more likely to be hospitalized and 11 times more likely to die from the virus than those who are fully vaccinated

and a managing director of opportunity labs. he was the pandemic and emerging threats coordinator at the department of health and human services underto have you both with us. i'll start with you. what can you tell us about the grassroots efforts there to combat vaccine hesitancy? >> hey, ayman. the site where i'm at is the definition of the phrase needing people where they are. so where i'm standing is a community center where people who work in the food services industry, latinos who own food trucks in the area, they come here to get supplies, food, ice for their trucks. but it's also been turned into a vaccine distribution suit. and that's thanks to a group called the austin latino coalition. that is made up of community leaders, grassroots folks who live on the east side of austin who speak spanish and who have taken it upon themselves to really do personalized outreach. they're not public health officials. they're not doctors. they know how to talk people and be an authentic voice to reach the people who still haven't gotten vaccinated. it's been fascinating to watch them on the ground and have the conversations. they make sure

of water before it hit. we deployed more than 250 generators and were working to get more in the area, especially the hospitals desperate need of them. the department of health and human services deployed 250 beds, federal, medical shelter in new orleans and five medical assistance teams available throughout the state. since the hurricane hit, more than 6,000 members of the national guard have been activated in louisiana and mississippi, alabama and texas. other states that support search and rescue and recovery efforts. for those that have lost their homes, states have been working with the american red cross to open almost 50 shelters across the gulf coast. we know there's much to be done in this response on our part. we need to get power restored. we need to get more food, fuel and water deployed. i get hourly updates on the progress from fema well into the night. we'll be working around the clock until the critical needs of the region are fully met. we'll meet them. even as we tackle the core elements of the disaster response, we're also deploying new tools to help speed this recovery. things that have not been used very much in prior hurricane responses. working with priv
