[ applause ] >> and at that exact same time in blacksburg, another veteran turned law enforcement officer was facing a similar situation in caroline county. after detaining a suspect found along i-95. michael hammer had placed that suspect in the car when suddenly the individual grabbed for the trooper's weapon and forced it to discharge in his leg. bleeding profusely in the struggle, he was able to reach another weapon that he kept nearby and was able to subdue the suspect. trooper hammer was rushed to mary washington university hospital where he underwent emergency surgery. tonight, trooper mike hammer is still recovering from the injuries. but he and his wife natalie are here with us in the gallery. i want to say trooper hammer, your bravery and commitment to the safety of the citizens of virginia will not be forgotten. . >> derek, a murder mystery solved. prince georges county police arrested 49-year-old lin wood johnson, an oxen hill resident and charged him with first- degree murder. police say johnson knew harris, a well known alexandria community activist. but right now, they aren't saying exactly how. harris was last seen in alexandria on september 21. the next day, a man was caught on surveillance video using harris' atm card at a local bank. and harris' phone was found later that day on the woodrow wilson bridge. harris' car, meanwhile, was found on october 11 in prince georges county. the motive for the murder was robbery, but not giving any details about that robbery, siting the extremely active on going investigation. >> we work night and day with our partners in alexandria to identify the suspect. we have identified one. again, i want to stress we have a full written and verbal confession and we recovered what we believe to be the murder weapon and the murder weapon is a firearm. >> prince georges county police say they expe
