>> as derek just mentioned, the 5:00 a.m. update is in and tropical storm elsa has weakened a little bit more, it is now a 65-mile-per-hour storm. and it will move to the north and east. what we'll see here, it will make landfall later this morning as a weakening tropical storm, it will move into southeast georgia, on into the carolinas. and this is where we do have watches and warnings in effect. you can see the blue here from southeast georgia all the way up north of charleston. that is a tropical storm warning. and then the yellow here from wilmington north, that is a tropical storm watch. as this system takes this journey up to the north, it will take all of that rainfall, all the thunderstorms that you saw on radar and it will spread it up the eastern sea board. and for that reason, coastal georgia and coastal south carolina is under a level 3 out of 4 threat for flash flooding today. we're also going to see it add some storm surge to this swampy region here. we could see 1 to 2 foot storm surge across the savannah area

joining me now is meteorologist derek van dam. derek, you're tracking this heatwave.t going to get? >> yeah, interestingly enough, kim, we'll get to the details in just one moment. in terms of linking extreme weather events to climate change, it's interesting, because all the things we report on here at cnn weather from hurricanes to droughts to tornadoes, we actually have the strongest direct evidence to long duration and long lasting heatwaves like we're experiencing over the western united states, and that direct evidence pointing towards a warming planet. so really puts into it perspective, especially when we start breaking all-time record high temperatures. and we've talked about this yesterday. we have now broken even more. needles, california, las vegas, nevada tying their all-time record high temperature yesterday, being saturday. and so did bishop, california as well. this is just some of the mini records that were broken through the day yesterday. so we're peaking to answer your question, kim, we're peaking this heatwave today and from yesterday as well. so

for more on this, let's bring in meteorologist derek van dam.e to describe it. you know, we don't want to sound like a broken record, but when we are flirting with all-time world record high temperatures we have to put an asterisk. we have to discuss it because it's so significant. let's talk about death valley. what happened there yesterday. 130-degree official temperature coming out of that region. this is in california, of course. and it has only reached 130 degrees two other times on record. this, of course, death valley, california, has the world record temperature for the hottest temperature on the planet recorded reliably at 134 degrees, back in july of 1913. and august 2020, that's still a preliminary high temperature of 131 degrees. so still some wiggle room there. but temperatures there are incredibly, incredibly hot. there's the 30 million americans under the excessive heat alert in place for the great basin, that includes phoenix, s sacr sacramento. and what happens it produces what is called sinking air or substantive. and acts like
