. >> joining me to discuss the path forward is derek johnson, president of the naacp. thank you for taking the time this morning. >> thank you. >> so voting rights as envisioned by the president and democrats will not pass in its current form. democrats clearly just don't have the votes. who do you hold responsible? >> the whole system has been fraught with partisan posture around an issue that is not partisan in nature. we're talking about a similar bill passed in 2006 by, voted for by 16 sitting republicans, even when you talk about senator romney, his father supported the voting rights act when he was governor of michigan, and so people are posturing this as a partisan activity when in fact we're talking about protecting rights of voters upholding the constitution. >> you're right. these used to pass with broad bipartisan majorities, acts to expand voting rights. this is different. i wonder, though, you heard from mitt romney there saying he did not hear from the president. you even heard from some democrats, dick durbin saying the president's rhetoric criticized th

we are joined by derek johnson, the naacp president and ceo get to talk about voting rights, a debate that has been happening in washington. let's begin with your reaction to senators kyrsten sinema and joe manchin saying that they oppose changing the filibuster rules or the two voting rights bills being pushed by the president and other democrats. derek: you cannot be for voting rights protection and not be willing to make sure we implement policy to protect the right of voters across the country. this isn't just about two democratic senators, it's about all 100 senators. by a vote of 98-0, the senate passed the voting rights act. what happened between 2006 and now is the complete politicization of the right to vote and access to the ballot box. what should be a simple administrative procedure to ensure that no state, no jurisdiction are discriminating against a certain population. or to make sure there is access to voting. because one party, quite frankly , have determined that they want to limit access to voting as opposed to expand the platform to attract new voters. host: the sen

i want to bring in derek johnson, president and ceo of the naacp. so glad to have you here today. good afternoon. >> good afternoon. >> i want to talk to martha washington. she traveled from dallas because she believes so much about this issue and she wants senators to pass this. >> i'm from the south and got the opportunity to know my great-grandmother who died a few years ago. she was 94. for half her life she wasn't able to vote when she fought hard for the right to vote. it's our duty to make sure we get out here and we fight for people like her. >> that is the backdrop, right, from a very real and personal basis for this conversation. how do you view tomorrow's debate on election reforms that's going to happen in the senate? >> i think it's an important debate, but i don't want to conflate what we're talking about here. we're talking about voting rights protections. it's not a partisan issue, it's about ensuring that that young lady and many people across the country, when they go to cast their ballot, their ballot will be an effective ballot.

so the current president of the naacp -- derek johnson -- issued a statement tonight saying quote, while president biden delivered a stirring speech today, it is time for the administration to match their words with actions. um, and that's the criticism coming from the naacp. do you think it's merited? has biden tried to do enough here? >> derek and i were there to -- today together along with jesse jackson, al sharpton, many leaders from georgia. and we stand united with -- with all the voting rights leaders in georgia about the need for the words today to lead to actions. clear on that. what i hear from manchin in those comments i think is different maybe than what you heard. he said he is open to rules changes. manchin is a very sophisticated speaker. you got to remember he was for -- sorry, he was against what is now called the freedom to vote act. before he helped author this current version, and now is for it. he is somebody who is already moved on the arc and i believe he will move further. today wouldn't have happened without hundreds of thousands of activist demanding the presid
