our meteorologist derek van dam is on the scene for us. an update. >> well, this is what this is some of the most intense part of hurricane francine, which was upgraded to a category two hurricane just upon its final approach. into southern louisiana, where i'm located, we are in morgan city were outside of the flood wall protection area so not actually downtown the wind bands and rain bands associated with this are all part of the northern eye wall so if we have a radar going right now, you can kind of see that we are getting this constants barrage of some of the most intense part part of what hurricane francine has to offer as it pivots around the morgan city area here in saint mary's parish landfall occurs about 30 miles to my southwest and terrebonne parish. there was a wind gaza, eugene island just to my south of 100 five miles per hour complete whiteout conditions and we have this simultaneous triple threat unfolding sure hurricane warnings as well as storm surge warnings and a tornado watch and a flash flood warning at the same time

we have meteorologist derek van dam live for us and apalachicola. derek, what are things looking like there? >> yeah. i think it's important to note that this now is a major hurricane. this will be the fifth major hurricane to shift florida. florida in the past since 2017. so this is a significant developments. the hurricane hunters here finding winds near the surface strong enough to make that call to a category three storm. now, we're in franklin county here in apalachicola. we're facing a multitude of threats, storm surge warning. we have a hurricane warning in effect, but we also have a flash flood warning and also a tornado watch very near us. we've had over seven inches of rain in the past 36 hours. and this isn't even directly associated with hurricane helene. its tropical moisture surging north but the heaviest rain is still yet to come. i think once we look back at history books with this storm we're going to see that the catastrophic flood potential with it is going to be a big player. you can see on this map here the highlighted area and

we are expecting to happen, sometime in the next hour, coming up next for us, cnn meteorologist derek van dam. he's in illogical florida, where potentially there are extremely damaging storm surges expected. derek, what are you seeing where you are? >> well, i'll be i'm going to be quite frank with you you know the fact that we're about 40 miles, 50 miles roughly west of where the most powerful part of hurricane helene is. and we're feeling these types of winds i'm i'm worried about what it's going to look like in the morning at first light across the big bend area, we know how powerful this storm is. and the most extreme part of the storm about to make landfall. i think it's important to put it into perspective for our viewers just from a meter the logical standpoint, hurricane ian in 2020 came ashore with a central pressure of 941 millibars. remember, a lower pressure means a stronger hurricane hurricane hunters now flying through the eye i'll have recorded reading submit 940 millibars. so the storm could be coming on onshore. more powerful than ian did when it came ashore. just south of fo

some areas cnn's derek van dam is in apalachicola. how are things there? >> so apalachicola adamson has just passed low tide and we have had 3.6 feet of reported at that low tide value. and a buoy on the west side eye wall of a major hurricane helene. so still out in the gulf mexico, about 100 miles away, registered wave heights at 25. so we anticipate as the tide levels, a high tide approaches, and as the brunt of the storm approaches surge is going to come it fast and it's going to come in furious as well. conditions there have deteriorated so quickly we, as you would expect, with an incoming major category four hurricane, but when we talk about the immediate threats to this area aside from storm surge, it is the potential for catastrophic winds. there is a extreme wind warning that the national weather service, it really reserves for the most extreme stream moments during a hurricane events. they have issued one just yet, but i do anticipate that to occur probably along the coastline of the big bend just to my east taylor county, perhaps an tallahassee

let's get straight to our meteorologist, the weatherman himself, derek van dam. rek, good morning to you. what are you looking at today? >> good morning, kasie. we are starting off the week with a bang quite a bit of activity across the western gulf of mexico. this is what is known as potential tropical cyclone six. all you need to know is that it has not been established. a named just yet francine will be the name. it will be given later this morning if not enter this afternoon because the storm is going to consolidate and become more organized as time goes on. so we still have all these tropical storm watches that include parts of the extreme southern texas coastline, including brownsville. but let's go forward in time because you can see a strength the mean tropical storm, making its way into a category one hurricane before making landfall late wednesday evening into early thursday morning, somewhere near the border of texas and louisiana, the storm has a lot of warm water to deal with. and so that's going to allow it to strengthen along with some other environ

let's bring in cnn meteorologist derek van dam. derek, even though it is, we can now i think is it a tropical storm at this point? we can still see what is left behind and more rain potentially on the way way for some parts of the country, correct >> that's right. the flood threat is not done even though the storm has moved on from this area in southern louisiana including the greater new orleans area. there are still pockets of flooding, just like what you see directly behind me, water is not supposed to be lapping up to this particular building on the bottoms of that vehicle that you can see in the distance there. this is just a drop in the bucket per say, of the flooding that was experienced here in st. mary's parish as hurricane francine made her final approach into new orleans. now so southern louisiana authorities are warning people to stay vigilant today as the floodwaters recede because there's still the potential for down power lines potentially chemicals still within the water. you don't want to traverse through any of thi

. >> we'll cnn meteorologist derek van dam joins me live from the cnn weather center and derek, we heard from kristen, it's a thunderstorms that have delayed the launch. >> how's it looking? >> that's right. and i so you know, it all comes down to the weather, not only the launch conditions currently right now, but also in the future, the next five days because a few variables will talk about kristen kind of glazed over them, just a few minutes ago. but in terms of the launch criteria obviously, one of these strict criteria has been broken, so they delayed the launch this morning. these are very strict criteria because they need to fit within this window. we can have winds exceeding 30 miles per hour. there can't be cloud cover that's a greater than 4,500 feet thick. certainly, no light at don't want to have lightning within the vicinity gonna look at the radar because here's cape canaveral the activity really that i'm noted, i thought we would get this launch off this morning was well off shore and then it as we zoom into cape canaveral here yes, this is where the launch pad is actually

let's get to our meteorologist, the weatherman, derek van dam with the latest derek good morning. >> good morning. kasie, the good news is that the storm has not strengthened overnight. the bad news is, is we still have a very rough next 12 hours or so across the coast of the carolinas. so if you're extending your weekend, perhaps along the beaches here, we will have to deal with some high surf strong, gusty winds, and the potential for some localized flash flooding as well. there is a tropical storm warning that extends basically just south of charleston through wilmington and morehead city. this is a low pressure. we're calling this a potential tropical cyclone. i we don't want to split the difference and fine-tune the naming here, but the point is that this was just bring about of heavier rainfall and the potential for gusty winds and excess of 40 miles per hour throughout the course of the day today. so you can see the system moving on shore within the next 12 hours, bringing rainfall with it too much of the carolinas, even into virginia, ports of northern georgia and eastern ten

into a category four storm before slamming into florida's gulf coast tomorrow, our meteorologist, derek van dam is on the scene for us. he's along the gulf coast and florida close to where helene is expected to make landfall, derek, what are we in for when this hurricane hits >> well, if this storm surge indicator is any kind of indication of what's to come here and battery park and apalachicola than we need to be preparing for the worst. this indicates the shading of blue though potential water low levels of a category four landfalling hurricane kaine within this area. the shading of yellow that is a 43 water inundation. this shading of red, of course, a category two. and i want to just show you the ten to 15 foot storm surge. we're anticipating with this cat four storm coming in. and that is nearly twice as high is where i'm standing now. that will certainly inundate buildings within this area. this is the storm that people within apalachicola, franklin county have feared under a mandatory evacuation within the entirety of this county. and the reason this area so susceptible to storm surge is

let's get to our meteorologist, the weatherman, derek van dam. derek, good morning. >> good morning. kasie. you said it. well, there we're going to have warm air that fuels the chance of severe weather today, you need three things for thunderstorms to really develop. severe thunderstorms. you need warm temperatures, you need some sort of instability which could be high relative humidity and you need a trigger something like a cold front that will actually cause the uplift and trigger those development of thunderstorms. so here's the warmth. look at that upper 80s, lower 90s across the nation's midsection. the upper midwest. there's the cold front that's the trigger. and you can already see some of the thunderstorms firing ahead of that cold front as it advances eastward so this is the areas that we're highlighting today, duluth, minnesota to minneapolis software to des moines, to kansas city, even outside of tulsa damaging winds, large hail, isolated tornadoes cannot be ruled out with some of these storms that spin up later this afternoon timefram

cnn meteorologist derek van dam is in florida as residents prepare for the storm's arrival. >> if thiseasurement is any indication of what's to come with approaching hurricane helene. then here in apalachicola, we need to prepare for the worst this shading of blue represents the potential storm surge, inundation from a category four landfalling hurricane, which we are anticipating here. this is for a category 43 in this shading of red is inundation with a category two hurricane. now, with over ten feet of storm surge right here where i'm located, that's what's in the forecast. you could see that that is nearly twice as high as how tall i am. this is the storm that people here have feared for their entire lives. and the reason this area is so susceptible to storm surge and hurricanes is because of the shallow nature of the gulf of mexico over my right shoulder. you can go 50 miles out into the gulf of mexico and have only 1020 feet of water underneath. you know, that shelf actually drops off very quickly. so an approaching storm pushes up the water from the eastern gulf of mexico and th

i want to start with derek van dam joining me now though from apalachicola on the florida panhandle. and hurricane helene, derek heading your way going to be a waiving as i said, the formal arrival sun what are you seeing? what do you expect? >> well, this area in particular is bracing for what could be the most powerful land falling hurricane in big bend history. and that's really saying something because i often refer to this as the catcher's mitt of hurricanes. if you just look at the tobogo fee this thing is just primed for hurricanes to just move in and it's so vulnerable as well. i was trying to think of ways to encapsulate for our viewers the what we're experiencing here on the ground, the familiar sights, the familiar sounds we're hearing this kind of ai howell almost a roar every once in a while. these worlds of wind come sweeping by associated with some of the heavier rain bands, we get pelted in the face with some of these stronger gusts and the rain bands that feel like almost like a power washer comes through. i walked out our front door and got instantly bombarded with a

let's go to cnn meteorologist derek van dam. he's tracking conditions and apalachicola, which is along the florida panhandle and franklin county in which quite frankly, derek, we have said a lot but here in recent hurricane seasons, we're hearing that helene could bring devastating storm surge there yeah, that's definitely true. >> and we're keeping a very keen eye to the sky around here because on top of that storm surge threat is the threat of waterspouts moving inland. there was a specific scotia in from the weather prediction center that highlighted this area, franklin county and apalachicola, where i am for these incoming water spouts. we've been monitoring very closely to see if any of these briefs spin-ups come through, but that's just one of a myriad of problems. threats that thinks this area you can see other vacant streets that line apalachicola, mandatory evacuations for all of franklin county. but i want to show you the pooling of the water. this is inland flooding because before helene's the arrival, we have already

southern texas now under a tropical storm watch, let's get to our meteorologist, the weatherman, derek van dam. derek, good morning. >> good morning, kasie. we are just a couple of days away from the statistical peak of the hurricane season here in the atlantic. so we are right on cue to see development now onto the western gulf of mexico. and that is where our focuses potential tropical cyclone six likely to become francine later this morning. as you mentioned, there are tropical storm watches for extreme southern texas coastline. this will likely be expanded through the course of the day today into louisiana. the reason we have tropical storm watches is because the outer wind field from a soon to be francine could lightly likely clip into southern texas through the course of the day today, but we're really focused in near the border of texas and louisiana where we could experience tropical storm-force to low-end category one hurricane conditions as the storm is forecast to strengthen as it approaches the golf coast. and the mainland of the u.s. lots of rain associated with the system flash f

let's get straight to our meteorologist, the weatherman, derek van dam to help us understand it. derek, good morning good morning. >> kasie, as expected we now have hurricane watches posted for parts of the western coastline of florida that is into the gulf of mexico, is it's a storm system approaches here in the coming days. and i want you to see this. so this is new with the 5:00 a.m. update from the national hurricane center, that shading of pink that's a hurricane watch from basically indian pass near apalachicola southward into inglewood. this does include tampa bay. and the reason we have these watches extending so far south, including seen a storm surge watches as because we anticipate the storm to grow in size as it approaches the florida peninsula on thursday and friday. so it will push up a lot of water. it will bring the heavy rain band. and of course, the storm surge threat along with it, which by the way, within the big bend of florida could reach between ten to 15 feet above normally high dry ground. we will anticipate up to nine feet of storm surge potential in and

cnn meteorologist derek van dam joining us now from atlanta with more so eric, i understand now the time it has been moved to 5:38 a.m. eastern time. it tell us why the delay yeah. >> good morning, christina. well, it's all about the weather, right. and it's not just about the launch. what whether what's happening right now, it's actually about the weather happening five days from now because they splashdown is so critical as well as the astronauts re-enter our earth's atmosphere. again, little bit less than a week from today. so they have to look at all of these criteria. but let's focus in on what's happening right now in cape canaveral, where the launch is about to take place, wins by the way, cannot exceed the launch sites over 30 miles per hour. that's really important, but also equally important is not to have any lightning or potential cloud cover that could induce lightning within the area. so there's this criteria. we can have cloud layer is thicker than 4,500 feet and also certainly no cumulonimbus clouds within the vicinity because as we've known from previous shuttle launches
