derrick, good morning. >> reporter: good morning, aaron. that ceremony is due to take place at about 9:00 a.m. over at the training facility in southwest. more than 30 paramedics and firefighters are scheduled to get this award, those who responded to the incident here at the navy yard back on the 16th. this is the medal of excellence and it goes to those who display extraordinary courage in response to an incident. this comes as questions arose in the immediate wake of this incident regarding stachg shortages and communication. it serves to highlight the valor of those who did respond, who were on the ground and who, despite whatever adversity did exist, nonetheless, did their jobs under those unusual circumstances and it's an interesting point just a few weeks ago d.c.'s police chief was at the tomb of the unknowns laying a wreath there to sort of highlight the relationship between the police department and the military district of washington. well, this this today, that incident and this award today also serve to highlight the fire and e

derrick says, will common core stifle teachers?, it will regurgitate, it's politics simple, it stifles individuality. there are some common criticism that there will stifle have itity. what is your comment? >> far from it. as the comments are mentioned, students are expected to regurgitate facts, these new standards are all about critical thinking. there are a lot of falsehoods out there and i've heard a couple of them mentioned on this show. unfortunately the idea that you somehow don't have to get the right answer. it is a falsehood on the internet simply not true. there are other falsehood spread about the common core. we should have a debate, i personally welcome the debate, it's good we're talking about the debate and some of these policies but we need to be honest about what these standards actually are, what they actually are covering which is high quality english and language arts standards. and it's going odrive i think better instruction, not mandate how that instruction is delivered but really encourage states, districts
