bacarri, you know the naacp president derrick johnson told cnn that civil rights groups are trying to land an actual meeting, sit-down meeting with the president-elect. maybe a virtual meeting with the president-elect and vice president-elect for that matter. how important is that civil rights groups are being heard as this new administration is actually being formed? >> very, very important. i know some people say give them a chance it's early but you can't wait until it's too late and you can't wait until the appointments are being made. the fact is that we have had a lot of diverse appointments to this point. but they have been deputy level positions and been advisory roles and what people want to see are black and brown people who lead these agencies because they are very qualified people who can lead these agencies. whether or not we are talking about the department of homeland security or interior excuse me and someone like deb hallen or talking about javier becerro or west or johnson or perez or patrick for attorney general. all of these names need to get the fair shake, which

joining me now is the president of the naacp derrick johnson. good to see you, derrick.hank you for coming in. what was your big takeaway, first and foremost, from your meeting with the president-elect? >> the biggest takeaway is they're hoping for ongoing dialogue for civil rights leaders. i think that's important. many of us in the civil rights community know the success of this administration will be all of our success. our goal is to have ongoing dialogue to explore opportunities to open up, looking towards 2030 and beyond, to ensure equal protection under law for everyone and to make sure the commitment from this administration of racial equity is carried out across the entirety of the administration. >> why do you think joe biden needs a cabinet level civil rights czar? >> if it's going to be a priority of this administration as he has stated, someone should own that portfolio to ensure that it's actually being implemented. very similar to climate. if climate is a priority of the administration, which he has stated, he has empowered former u.s. senator john kerry a

. >> i spoke to derrick johnson, the president of the naacp yesterday about this.id yes, he's concerned about the makeup of the cabinet but he says what it's about for him is civil rights being at the center of the administration's agenda. what do you think about how biden is answering this question right now? >> i think that, you know, the answer is not as important as the action, right. so what we have is throughout this process kate whether we look at the transition agency review teams, there's nobody from an hbcu on the agency review team. there's no civil rights leader. no civil rights organizer on any of the agency review teams. i think hence president johnson's concerns. i think the other thing we have to pay attention to is they have buckets they outlined things, there's climate, covid, economics and the economy, what the path forward is for the path forward in that regard and racial justice. they made significant inroads on all of those things except when you talk about racial justice. i appreciate the fact that joe biden has expanded what the cabinet will

president and ceo of the naacp, derrick johnson. s "politics nation" president of the national action network, reverend al sharpton. gentlemen, eddie glaude jr. has the first question. >> hi, good morning, everyone. brother derrick, let me ask you this question. there's obviously this demand for more diverse cabinet on the part of the biden/harris administration. how do you all respond to this sort of claim? it's one thing to have black folk in high places, black faces in high places, but we need substantive representation around policies that will actually respond to the conditions of black communities around the country. how might you respond to some skepticism about just simply putting black faces in high places and not really billboarding substantive policy issues to address the condition of black folk around the country in this moment? >> good morning, eddie. great question. that's why at the naacp we are calling for someone who will be charged for the responsibility to oversee and ensure that this administration has policies th

talk about some of these very important conversations which makes me want to thank president derrick johnson not just for his leadership during the pandemic, but for making sure that we are staying connected with each other with real talk and invaluable information. when it comes to congress, acting we know that when joe biden source his oath to become the next president of the united states, and kamala, harris next vice president, we're still going to be in the middle of this pandemic. and in, fact will probably be deep in crisis. as we are seeing hospitalizations now reach record highs. deaths per day. this staggering number -- this crisis has already become the third largest mass casualty event in american history. unfortunately we know this mass casualty effect is affecting vulnerable populations. black and brown communities, native communities, this is something that the biden harris team will have to take on front and center in their agenda. us in congress at the same time, we control the strings. what i have been pushing for is really robust funding. especially for those jurisdictions

he feels like he deserves to be consulted, that his organization deserves to be consulted and derrick johnsonaacp deserves to have joe biden's ear in much the same way that labor organizations and environmental groups and other constituency groups have, perhaps even more so given the fact that black voters were decisive in joe biden's win. you know, driving turnout in places like pennsylvania and wisconsin and michigan. and to be clear, joe biden knows that, and the reason why we know that joe biden knows that is because he's said as much that night of his victory celebration where he said to the black community, specifically, he said, you've always had my back, and i will always have yours. the biden transition says that the group themselves is half people of color. they also say that of all the cabinet nominees that joe biden has put forward so far, half of them are people of color. and there is a disconnect here between sort of the legacy civil rights groups and some of the groups that are newer to the scene. so, i spoke with the head of color of change, a group that has been around since,
