derrick ward is live in vienna virginia. derrick, so what are you seeing right now? >> reporter: good morning. again, what we're seeing right now is a let up in the rain as a barely perceptible drizzle falling right now. you see route 123 behind me just remains wet. certainly passable. but again, this is what we're expecting now and a big change later on. if you take a look over here on the second day road, you see part of the all hands on deck effort by vdot. 3800 vehicles out at the ready to start treating the roads once the conditions become favorable for that. we've also seen on the way up here some smaller contract maybe pickup truck plow blades and salt dispensers in the back. sand and salt dispensers to make sure parking lots and some of the secondary roads are treated as well. because it looks like some of those businesses may indeed be open once the snow starts to fall. but again, preparing for all hands on deck here in virginia vdot is asking people not to travel if they don't have to and if you park your car, they're asking if they park this your driveway

live in northwest, derrick ward news 4. >> derrick, thank you. we are following a developing story this morning. a man is dead after a crash in prince george's county. this happened on livingston road in ft. washington after 1:00 this morning. it was a single-car crash. you can see the car right there in the woods. the driver did die at the scene. police say he lost control of his car, causing it to roll over. the driver was thrown out. >> right now maryland state police investigating a deadly crash on route 50. this according to investigators started with an off-duty cop. travis ala was driving on route 50 when he hit another car with raymond batters inside. batters died. the roadway is now back open. ala's car flipped over but he's expected to survive. >>> today we'll hear from man who says a prince george's police officer put a gun to his head. william cunningham was told quote, we're pgpd we shoot people by officer santiago. santiago was indict by a grand jury on friday and is fashioning assault charges and has been suspended without pay. cun

it is a weather alert day with snow expected all around our area and news 4's derrick ward there in his hat is live in rockville to show us what's going on rig now. hi derrick. >> reporter: well we've got snow flurries coming down. this can be the start of something slick. it's going to get worse later on. take a look at the road. this is rockville pike. obviously nothing to worry about at this point. don't let that deceive you. as the temperature drops and more of this falls, it will get treacherous. maryland is asking motorists to delay any travel. we've been lucky to have snowfalls on the weekends where traffic is a lot lighter and allows crews to get out. vdot has 1500 trucks on the road. d.c. has gone into a full deployment starting at 6:00 a.m. we don't have numbers on how much maryland has out. they are asking people to delay travel keep the roads clear so they can keep them clear of snow. right now you've just got a coating. be careful because it is definitely below freezing. there's always the issue of black ice from some of this that melted and froze and melted and froze again

let's go to news 4's derrick ward who joins us live from tenth street in northwest where three of those robberies happened. derrick? >> reporter: good morning. police do see enough similarity s that they think they could be related in terms of the victims and, of course in terms of the suspects. most of the victims have been female all happened during daylight hours in the morning. take a look at some video. the first happened tuesday at about 10:15 in the 600 block of p street. a woman was approached by two males and a female. someone pulled an unknown object police are calling it out from under their shirt. the victim was able to run away before anything was taken. about 12:20 in the 1100 block of 10th street two males pulled a knife and demanded money. the victim was not injured. then on wednesday a victim was approached by two men, one of those people did pull out a knife and the victim was assault assaulted. money was taken. also an incident in the 1600 block of vermont before 8:00 a.m. a knife was also used there. the victim was pushed to the ground and the wallet was taken from a

derrick ward live at ft.de. >> reporter: it's stale crime scene and more information is unfolding. the investigation will stretch into local jurisdictions. as we learn more about what happened here it seems it is a case of someone running from one crime scene and turning in or creating another crime scene that ended up having fatal consequences. the fbi blooefs it wasn't terrorism but had to be terrifying for those who witnessed it. a car drove up to one of the most secure places in the area. the two men inside the suv were dressed as women. a statement released by the nsa says the driver didn't follow an nsa police officer's inspections to leave the area. instead the car sped up and headed toward an nsa police vehicle. damage to both vehicles indicates there was a collision. nsa officers opened fire on the unauthorized suv and one of the men inside died on the scene. the agency says the cause of death hasn't been determined. the other man was take on the hospital along with one of the nsa police officers. a

derrick ward has been at the university of maryland, where the student who sent the e-mail has already been disciplined. >> reporter: it all started with an e-mail that's more than a year old but sparked a timely debate on the college park campus. the e-mail was sent by a student, a member of the campus chapter of the kappa sigma fraternity. it used racial slurs referring to african-american and asian women. the author also wrote about sexually assaulting women during rush wee the e-mail was dated january of last year and is just stassing but reaction from the university's president was quick once he learned about it earlier this week. he said "the vulgar language in the e-mail expresses views that are reprehensible to our campus community. we immediately met with the individual involved and a university investigation is under way." as word of the e-mail spread among -- >> wow, that'sry duck louse that we're in 2015 and people are still singling out and just -- wow. it needs to t stopped. >> reporter: the kappa sigma fraternity suspended the student after learning about the e-mail and

news4's derrick ward is live in alexandria with a closer look at these proposals. derrick? >> reporter: good evening, wendy. if you look behind me you see cs xx tracks in the foreground, in the background, blue and yellow line gw parkway and the rif. what's missing? how about a subway station. the metro board decided to go ahead with public hearings on a proposal to build a metro station in a potomac yards area. there are three or four proposals all centered east or north of glebe road. one mayor says it's critical to the development going on and will cost about $200 million. >> it's a pool of funds, combination of funds that will pay for the station primarily from the businesses and residents that are in that tax district neighborhood already in addition to the developer contributions that will come over the period of years. >> reporter: now, there's already been some preliminary environmental impact studying being done. but these public hearings will allow the public to weigh in on this and they could start as soon as late april. we'll hear more about that proposal and wh

news4's derrick ward was at today's board meeting. at 5:00 he shows us the four different proposals for metro to consider. >>> an overnight murder has police looking for answers in prince george's county. around 11:00 last night, officers responded to a shooting and found a man at a gas station a few blocks away. he did have some sort of trauma to the body but no evidence he'd been shot. detectives are trying to find the suspect and a motive. >>> new at 4, more back and forth as a maryland man tried twice for killing a teen has once again had the charges against him dismissed. last month michael johnson was indicted for the murder of north carolina teen felicia barnes. today a judge dismissed that indictment. barnes disappeared in december of 2010 while visiting her sister in baltimore. her body was found months later in northern maryland. a jury convicted johnson of second-degree murder but he was given another trial. that one ended in a mistrial. >>> well there is a major change in the works for drivers who use i-66 inside the beltw

brian ward is at the live desk now with what we've learned today. derrick derrick? >> the fbi is joining the investigation into why the co-pilot of that airliner brought that plane down, killing himself and 149 other people on board. the co-pilot 27-year-old andreas lubitz had some pilot training in the u.s. reports he may have been treated for some mental condition while he was in this country. in germany a search of his apartment turned up a torn-up medical leave slip that would have excused him from work on the day of the crash. officials with the airline say they never saw that leave slip. as the investigation continues the parents of one of the three americans killed on that plane are showing compassion for the man accused of bringing it down as well as his family. >> i don't feel anger. i'm really sad for the father, the parents of that young pilot. i can't imagine what they're going through right now. >> reporter: that plane went down in a remote section of the french alps. some of the belongings and remains are just being reached by investigators. meanwhile,
