news 4 derrick ward is at a drop-off point in leesburg, virginia. this isn't the only drop-off, right? >> reporter: no, it isn't. this is actually the dea headwaurs and they have a museum here, believe it or not. one of the exhibits is a medicine cabinet about the dangers right in your medicine cabinet. they're doing this to give people an opportunity to turn in dangerous drugs. they say about 2.1 million people in the united states do painkillers. opioid painkillers and studies suggest it can often lead to an addiction to stronger, non-medical drugs like heroin, and what they want to do is give people an opportunity to avert t danger by getting rid of those drugs. there are drop-off points today to take the drugs and have them properly disposed of. last year they collected about 702,365 pounds of those kinds of drugs that start out legal, but if abused can be dangerous. so what they're going to do later today is have a press conference, talk more about the problem and we'll have more information what you can do to avert that danger in your own home

derrick ward is live with new information. >> reporter: well, good morning. as you can see, it's a relatively calm situation out here right now, but that is a stark contrast to what happened out here about 10:35 last night. that's when police got a call for someone with a gun here in the 6200 block of spring hill court. and when greenbelt police officers got here, they were met with gunfire. joining me now is george matthews of the greenbelt police department. what happened once the officers got to the scene? >> the original call was for a person shooting a gun in the area of the 6200 block. by the time the officers it arrive on the scene, the individual evidently worked his way up to the third floor balcony. and the officers were actually taking on fire from the suspect. >> and so did the officers return fire? >> one officer did return fire, an attempt to neutral liz the situation and the individual struck tactical unit able to access the building, secure the scene and the individual was transported to pg general hospital where he was later pronounced dead.

derrick ward is live there this morning with the very latest. wow, we can see a lot of damage behind you. >> reporter: indeed there is. take a look at the damage. the roof is gone, the garage is totally exposed from the top. even the house next door, the vinyl siding buckled and began to melt. and that actually alerted the neighbors who live there. that started about 4:00 a.m. this morning and as you were saying, it was a pretty devastating fire. this house appears to be a total loss at this point. joining me now the spokesperson for the montgomery county fire department. pete, what can you tell us about what happened here? >> so we had one occupant home, apparently she for whatever ron closed behind her and locked. so she was unable to call 911 at that point. so we believe the fire burned for an extended period of time before a neighbor next door called it in about shortly after 4:00. when we arrived on the scene, the house was fully an blblaabl. we had 75 or 85 firefighters on the scene. no injuries to the firefighters, however the occupant of

derrick ward is live in landover hills with what we have learned today about the investigation. derrick? >> reporter: well, good evening. we have learned a bit more about the investigation. it's all happening against this backdrop of grief you see here at the landover hills fire department. there you see an ambulance that one of the fallen firefighters would have served on and bunting there above the station. we do know now of course there's been no arrest or charges against the man accused of shooting those firefighters. and authorities say they have yet to talk to two key witnesses. one is a surviving firefighter and the other is the brother of the homeowner. two of the firefighters that were injured in all of this, one of them may have been injured by trying to drag a fallen colleague out of the line of fire. all of this is happening against the backdrop of preparation for a sad ceremony. preparations for the funeral of firefighter john ulmschneider are almost done. kevin swain is recovering from being shot multiple times from that same incident. >> i'm pleased to report kevin
