margaret: let me start with detroit. detroit is a city with the history. a city with a very rich history of african-americans organizing and liberatory efforts. going back to the underground railroad, it runs through detroit, folks stopped there. some also move on to other cities, they move on to canada for example. so detroit is well-positioned to support african-americans who are running from violence in the south. so i pick three or four cases where african-americans are escaping places like florida, louisiana, and mississippi. those are the three cases. and they all end up lack bottom detroit starting in 1920's. i tell the story of a woman who is being prosecuted, she is a nurse being prosecuted because she is involved in an incident that resulted in the death of one of her patient who thought an abortion -- sought and abortion. the patient's boyfriend escapes. the pensacola authorities started a new prosecution so she realizes she has to get out of dodge and she does and she ends up in detroit. so i tell her story and i also tell the story of a man wh
