but not here in detroit. detroit is majority african american, heavily democratic, and people who were at the launch party here, which was a non partisan watch party. he was fired for about the prospect of having the 1st female president without having the 1st female black president they, they were cheering on pamela harris by and large, there, there was a trump standard to here. and they were booing. trump, i heard a number of times when he said things like some of the hair is wanted to take away guns. common le harris was going to do, you know what a number of things people here were yelling out, fact chat. so it's pretty much diametrically opposed to the crowd you just saw there with phil lavelle. and let me just give you an example. this is your car to he's, he's been watching the entire debate here very patiently. let me ask you to carter who was uh, pamela harris. and why do you think she was? she was clearly dominant toner. you know, opponents, she, she killed. and you heard me describing how the crowd here was reacting. what did you see? why, what did you see among, you know, t

for the pbs news hour, paul solman in and around detroit. for more on both presidential campaigns' efforts to appeal to working class voters, we're joined by our politics monday duo. that is amy walter of the cook political report with amy walter and tamara keith of npr. we just heard the endorsements from a union don't necessarily mean the union members are going to go that way. but how is the harris campaign trying to turn all those endorsements into votes? tamara: it's pretty simple. those endorsements come with what we would call a ground game. that is union members out knocking on doors, campaigning with their family members, campaigning with their neighbors . for instance, the afl-cio endorsed by back then extremely early, very early. and when i talked to them about why they did that, they said, because that opens the floodgates to be able to begin doing that doorknocking and other on the ground campaign work. it really just, for democrats, magnifies their already existing infrastructure to try to reach voters where they are because th

even though detroit claims and they're having a lot of progress, you're seeing police officers, leeds, new york city. we need those especially in black communities. one of the charts that you have in your book is about prison rates. so explain that. so in beginning of the 20th century, black men were least likely to be in federal prisons. if you say that, the trend that we see, the phenomenon that we see now is an outworking of slavery. what explains this drop the? truth of the matter is this is all the police did was people convict them who were last name of macdonald for the crime that mcdonald's have committed the prison would be overflowing with these mcdonald's. so what we then argue that somehow our system is anti mcdonald's when young black youth and that's what i talk about in the chapter young black youth are overwhelmingly more likely to be the victimizers. when a grandmother reports to the police that she was assaulted, that she was raped. that's what progressive would have us believe, that she identifies the black person that did that, even though it was a white person. th
