city of paris in them. and there is no sign of the trend being reversed. according to the detroitn permits for every one new construction permit. the mayor of detroit promised to demolish 10,000 homes during his four-year term will the goal of downsizing detroit into a denseble city. also detroit native mark, author of "detroit city is the place to be" due out next month. thank you for joining me and wes. we are he excited to talk about this topic underdiscussed the decline of america's great cities. rachel, there is a talk in and around the movie of ruin, to say this idea that these cities, they're all these vacant homes artists can go there, thing are happening with food and arts and culture but the city as it is for residents, it's a false narrative. that these cities really are struggling and you look at what's happening with the downsizing in detroit and that would bear that out. >> also the narrative has been even blown up even more just from the super bowl commercials, it was incredible, they happened while we were filming and a couple commercials and everyone was satisfied

detroit. i don't know if there's enough money for other cities lining up behind detroit. the one party i could not get to speak to me at all was any representative from any corporation. which is sad, that's sort of the missing element. we need to figure out -- you want to persuade some of these corporations that, you know, you want to get them incentives to stay. in detroit, i think should really be seducing businesses to come. there's a lot of land, lot of people out of work. tax incentives will come, that will be wonderful. you also need some sort of assurance that these companies are basically decimating the people that would eventually buy their products. i feel like conversation happening. how do we keep the corporations here. how do we make that happen. i would like to hear that. they continue it leave this droves. >> if you watch the full documentary. there's a lot of music. not a narrator. we're not giving people the feeling of a documentary. let me run a little bit george mcgregor from your documentary. my entire life, 40-plus years now, and i've worked for the city of detroit over 20 years. and there is definitely a new focus on the condition of the city, on cities in america as well. because cities are the engine that built this country. >> right. >> um, i think what you overwhelmingly are struck by when you've been in the trenches as long as i have is that there are so many silos and breakdowns both within city government and within the region that your example of midtown, i don't think a lot of people realize how many tax increment districts we have in the city that create separate financial and governance structures so that really as much as downtown looks better than i think i've seen it my entire life, the benefits of that are not integrated into, you know, the old neighborhoods question. so within the city limits you have a tremendous overlap and overlay of governmental jurisdictions, right? separate fund raising ability, separate governance. within the region i think it's 140 municipalities within metropolitan detroit as we try to address some of the en

i have lived in detroit my entire life, 40 plus years. i've worked for the city of detroit over 20 years. there is definitely a focus on in condition of the cities america as well. what your overwhelmingly struck by is that there are so many breakdowns both with and city government and with in the region. the st. separate financial and government structures. this looks better than i have ever seen it. the benefits of that are not integrated into the old neighborhood questions. within the city limits you have a tremendous overlap and overlay of governmental jurisdictions, a separate fund-raising abilities. within the region, as we try to address some of the environmental challenges, how do you bring all of these different entities under one page? i worry about the capacity for planning, the capacity to make use of a lot of these amazing innovations. that capacity is brought to make the reaching competitive in the development since. that capacity is with in city government to make sure our inspectors even know what green roof is. how do you keep people's skill sets
