as a matter of fact, he was upgraded to fair a few days before he was sent over to fort devens. it's a serious facility. it has about 1,000 patients in there right now, and they have a full medical staff, doctors, nurses, things like dialysis and x-raies. now, as deborah mentioned, i was told they can't do extensive invasive surgeries. so, again, that tells you something about his condition. if he needed surgery immediately, like a real surgery, they wouldn't be able to do it there. so they must feel comfortable that he wouldn't need a surgery like right away in a second. they also don't have an accredited intensive care unit. so it appears perhaps they don't have an intensive care unit at all. again, this tells us that his condition is much better than it was, you know, even just five or six days ago. >> all right. elizabeth, appreciate it. remember how the tsarnaev brothers' father was supposed to be heading into the states to cooperate with the investigation, at least that's what he had claimed, the family members had claimed. that's not going to happen as i mentioned for a w

devens [ inaudible ] no audio. >> ashleigh, we want to tell you we are here at ft.ns, the medical center is here. this is an area that's run by the bureau of prisons. they don't do extensionive surgeries, but they do have a high security area. we are told by a spokesperson, that quote, there's an extensionive amount of medical practitioners on hand. clearly this was done with a lot of forethought. they needed to get him out of that hospital and to an area where he was secure, where he is away from other patients. we know the u.s. marshals were the ones in charge of the transport. it is not clear exactly how long they're going to keep him at this particular facility. right now they are playing it day by day, week by week to see how his recoverry progresses. now indication if he will receive visitors or his federal defender will visit him here. but he will have access to him. we were able to look at 2.5 years of tweets. they paint an interesting picture. some are more interesting than others, but that comes with the benefit of 20/20 hindsight. >> reporter: the picture

marshals transferred dzhokhar tsarnaev to devens, they took him off a loading dock at the back of the hospital. it was under the cover of the night. 3:30 in the morning last week. he was going off a mirror loading dock. he did go with u.s. marshals in what's called transport vehicles. they resemble large hum vees. tom fuentes joins me live now. he is in washington, d.c. and from the american college of emergency physicians is a doctor on the phone. if i could just ask you -- i hope you heard all the details. are you surprised to hear the details but not only of his arrival, but his departure and treatment in between? >> no because he is a suspect. he is very highly guarded. they have to ensure his physical safety and physical custody as well as take care of his medical issues. so, i'm not that surprised at how they handled it. >> also the transfer of this high level detainee. clearly the media was camping out 24 hours to try to get a shot of his transfer. no one was able to. the fact they used a loading dock, does that surprise you at all? >> no, because as you said they wanted to kee

susan candiotti is in devens massachusetts where the federal prison is where the youngest suspect is now being held. bring us up to date. >> reporter: hi carol. as you said there are so many aspects of this investigation that are going on. but there's considerable debate now about the disclosure that the russians had been wiretapping the mother of the bombing suspects. at least we know of in early 2011. this information coming to light only in the last 24 hours or so that the russians were wiretapping the bombing suspect's mother and ourll us -- sources who have knowledge of this investigation -- that the wiretap involved a phone call from one of the bombing suspects. we don't know which brother. to his mother who was in russia at the time in early 2011 and that the subject was about jihad. now sources describe this conversation as being vague, but nevertheless the russians did not disclose it to the fbi until, well within the last few days. so everyone is wondering why is that? it makes one wonder what was theinvestigation, how long had the russians been wiretapping, eavesdropping o

first i want to go to jason carroll, outside federal medical center in devens. where dzhokhar tsarnaev was transferred early, 3:00 a.m. 30 miles northwest of the hospital where he had been held. jason, what do you know about his condition right now? >> reporter: well, what i can tell you is this -- his condition has improved. i think you remember on monday when he wasold about the charges that he was facing at his bedside, he was able to nod. when asked if he could afford an attorney, he said no. his condition has stabilized much more since then. he's able to sit up, able to communicate more than he was on monday. his condition has stabilized so much that u.s. marshals were able to handcuff him, bring him here to this facility where he went through an intake screening process. that happened very early this morning. it's a step-by-step process, erin. the first part of that process is when the inmate, tsarnaev, was strip searched. after that, he went through a medical screening, then a psychological screening. the psychological screening to determine whether or no

i want to go now it our jason carol outside the devens federal medical center, the prison where dzhokhar tsarnaev was transferred. what can you tell me about how he was handled once he arrived there? >> reporter: we're told it happened around 5:00 a.m. this morning. when tsarnaev was brought here by u.s. marshals in handcuffs, he was put through something called the intake screening process. he's strip searched. and then following that he's given a psychological evaluation. he's also given a medical evaluation. and then there is something else that he goes through called a social intake screening. and during that process, he's basically told about all of the rules that the facility that he's going to be housed here. and then he's fingerprinted. he then -- official takes a dna sample from him. he's also photographed at that point as well. all of that material then turned over to the fbi. and, jake, i'm told that entire process lasted for just about an hour, before they then transferred him to his cell. >> and jason, what can you tell us about the cell he will be housed in? >> reporter: we

medical facility, but there are only six medical facilities like the one that tsarnaev is in at fort devensa lot of patients. they have about a thousand inmates getting medical care there. they have six doctors, 60 nurses, they have 24-hour care, dialysis, x-rays. but it is interesting. there is some things they don't seem to have. one is that they can't do big surgeries. and also according to -- if you look on the website, the joint commission, they're not accredited for intensive care unit. don't have -- don't appear to have an intensive care unit. that tells us that he is not in terrible condition. we know he was discharged in fair condition. apparently they felt comfortable discharging him to a place that doesn't do big surgeries, that appears not to have an intensive care unit. >> elizabeth, what about the hospital where he was for a week? beth israel deaconess in boston. a number of the bombing victims are being treated there as well and understandably so, having his presence under the same roof is incredibly upsetting for the victims and the families. tell me about that. >> i was tal

. >> reporter: the 19-year-old was also moved to fort devens, a high security medical prison outsidea week of his recovery at beth israel hospital, where he was formally charged monday at a bedside hearing. authorities say since his arrest, the surviving suspect has been able to provide details about the bombs he and his older brother tamerlan are accused of making. nbc news obtained government analysis on the bombs. the design reportedly similar to one outlined in the al qaeda affiliated magazine uses low expelosis that are consistent with commercial fire works, packed with shrapnel. >> this design indicates a level of sophistication and determination to really make these bombs reliable. >> reporter: investigators are also tracking other leads, searching a landfall in new bedford. law enforcement officials say they are looking for tsarnaev's receipts. back in boston, victim jeff bouman told a local radio station he noticed the elder brother just before the deadly bombing. >> it struck me odd. that's what i remember of him. and then the next thing you know, you hear fireworks and i'm
