in kitty hawk and nagshead and kill devil kill devil where we are, it's been a fairly mild storm. not really much sign of damage other than superficial damage, shingles off on the house beside us. the mayor of kill devil hills said it's amazing how little happened here. no 911 calls. no fatalities. not even any injuries reported. it's going to take a while for these winds to die down. i know in hyde county as the winds are beginning to die, they told me that they're going to get their emergency assessment teams out to take a look and see what level of damage there is. it's still going to be a number of hours before they can do that here in dare county. they might wait until tomorrow morning because the sun is going to go down very soon and the same thing in other counties. the folks here say if the damage is not too bad, they should be able to be open for business at the beginning of the week. they still have one more big week of the summer to go leading into labor day where a lot of these businesses try to make what they can before the end of the year. that's really the weekend t

that's the latest from kill devil hills, north carolina. i'm jay gray. jessica, back to you. >> it looks bad out there already, given the hurricane is going to make landfall in the morning. is it too late for people who haven't evacuated to get out and what can they expect if they haven't left? >> it is too late. that window of opportunities that shut at this point and they will be on their own until the storm passes. what they can expect is much more intense winds, a lot more rain. rain for perhaps 10 to 12 hours. that will produce a lot of flooding in this area. the wind could cause power outages, could knock down some trees. so there's still a lot to come with irene and they are going to have to face that on their own. sheriff deputies will not get out in the storm. they won't put officers in harm's way for those that decided to stay. >>>nk well, meteorologist rob mayeda joins us now. he's covering for jeff ranieri, who is covering that storm on the east coast. rob, tell us is the trajectory for eye remember still on course? >> still holding its path

we are in kill devil hills. you are probably familiar with the other town. nags head and kitty hawk and hundreds of happens of thousands people come here to vacation. and 175,000, two days ago were told to go home and most of the them heeded it. there is a lot of the people who stayed. many of residents and at a are tucked inside of their homes. we have seen curious folks looking at the storm. here on the beach where there is not much to fly around not too bad of an idea. but further inland that happened in north carolina. trees are not your friend during the storm. so stay inside until this passes. you might be curious and want to look around. but if you have trees around your home, a branch or tree can come down because of saturation of water. so do stay inside. >> northern outer banks, to tell you the truth, i road through more than a few of these storms. hugo and katrina and others, this is not too bad. the power remarkably is still on. farther south of us where there was more posure to the ocean, they are having problems. town of hatteras, things are di

john roberts to devils hills, north carolina, not surprising it's still raining.lo, john. >> reporter: it's still raining and when the hurricane took that jog to the east winds picked up by about 15 miles an hour. so we are in the thick of it now. eye is just a few miles away from us and making its way over the outer banks. the tiv de is coming back in and you can see the ocean, a lot of wind, a lot of waves. and we expect to see the storm surge start to creep it's a way up this dune. we have an update on a couple of things. earlier there was a report that there had been some actual breaches along the outer banks here down to hatteras. but there are were no breaches. unlike isabel in 2003 that cut the island in half where young school students had to take a fer to go to the school this is just overwash. we want to make sure everybody is clear on that. the other story that was out there there had been a breach in a levee at swan quarter which is one of those places where the ferry goes. they built a dike around it after isabel in 2003 but i talked to emergency mana

you are on kill devil hills, north carolina.his storm is on its way to you, 35 miles off the coast. you have seen things change the past 24 hours. >> you pushed a button because right before we went on you had steady rains at 55 miles per hour. the thing about the system it is making eulgts way north/northeast. as it does so, we will be exposeded to gusts, possibly heavier rainfall as the bands approach. one band has given us intermittent rainfall. possibly up to a foot of rainfall along the outer banks and across the intracoastal and sound and the shore of north carolina. something else to consider, look at the radar image. if you look just imagine it being cut with a giant plus sign on it. the upper right quadrant is where you will have some of your strongest winds and momentum as it spins in a counterclockwise rotation. with that we do expect the stronger winds, maybe tornados. and of course that's where the storm surge is. right behind me you can see the waters of the atlantic. some of the white caps coming in. amazing how m

we're finding reynolds wolf in kill devil hills. it has been tough trying to get a signal to talk to you because of the effects you're feeling right now. >> these effects we're getting now again, mostly wind. haven't had a drop of rain in quite a while. we're beginning to see some of the roofing tiles, a bit of insulation here and there from buildings as the gusts pushes them along. these are easily some of the strongest we had so far. this whole thing, this began basically as a cluster of thunderstorms off the coast and swept across the atlantic, and sure enough right here to the doorstep of the carolinas. we're feeling the fury at this point, but basically wind. wind, in some i was, detrimental by the debris it carries and the power outages it will cause. hundreds of thousands of people without power as we speak. it will take a while to restore everyone's power and with all the downed trees we anticipate that already have fallen. you have to remember too, the structures, spur of the moment, few drops of rain, finally feeling rain
