in san jose, devin fehley, kpix5. >>> speaking of fires, we have a new one to tell you about. this one burning in calaveras county. you can see that huge plume of smoke from the pg&e cameras there. there are evacuations in place. to give you some perspective on where this is, it's about an hour east of stockton and south of plasterville. cal fire says it has already burned 75 acres and has a dangerous rate of spread right now. let's get right to darren to talk about just the fire risk, not only in those more rural areas but really everywhere in the bay area today. >> yeah. we started out the newscast and you guys were showing the one here in the city on twin peaks, which, liz, you pointed out at the top, the smoke looks far less ominous than it did but we can see it from our camera. twin peaks, most of that is gray, wet, cloudiness from the marine layer but can you see the little whiffs coming off the hill top there? there's not a lot left. that's a very good sign. but this is so much about the dichotomy of where we are right now. there's a weather station not far from here. t

in san jose, devin fehley, kpx5. >>> so, taking a live look outside right now and the all important question, what will the forecast be as we bring in those fireworks and the man who has the answers, meteorologist darren peck. >> one of the best ways to answer that, ryan, is to go to the front lines where this batch of low clouds would be moving into the bay. this is the camera on top of sutro tower, watching the last hour and a half. watch the increase here as these midlevel clouds start to increase and eventually here on the last frame, you're going to see they pretty much just kind of take over and the camera's going to go gray for a moment. this camera is at about 1,500 feet. so that happens to be right about the same elevation most of the big fireworks would go off, right about 1,500 feet. so here's the forecast for three of the bigger shows across the bay. the one at pier 39 that so many people are coming into the city for, it's going to be a close call. the cloud base by then will probably be down to about a thousand feet at 9:00 when the show starts so some of the fireworks will prob

. >> devin fehely, kpix 5. >> as devin mentioned the worst of the smoke remained elevated in the atmosphere, well off ground level. this is the current air quality map using all of the purple air sensors which aren't the official epa sensors but we get a good sense of what's going on, and most are registering air quality in the good category. we saw that brown smudge on the horizon, that's the smoke, but it's off the ground level, and the good news for the bay area is the winds are going to become onshore in the next several hours pushing even the elevated smoke away from us. the wind shift still in the process of occurring. the washburn fire still producing plenty of smoke. some of that smoke still being blown from east to west, but the winds are going to shift and push the smoke from west to east. shifting winds at ground level complicate the efforts of the ground crews and the weather conditions overall aren't helpful. temperatures in the mid-90s. humidity below 20%. the winds aren't that strong, but they have been shifting. they are gone from the east to the west-southwest, only gusting
