kpix 5 reporter devin fehely just got on the scene a few minutes ago. devin, he is on the phone right now, have you been able to find out anything? >> reporter: yes. i'm here at the bart station at the intersection of grand and c street in hayward. i spoke to a witness of the shooting a short time ago. he tells me there was an exchange of gunfire. an officer was shot as well as the suspect. now, he says that it appears that the officer had been shot in the armed. he actually witnessed that officer and a second officer actually try to arrest or put handcuffs on the suspect. that was obviously complicated by the fact that the officer had been shot in the arm and that he appeared to struggle to get those handcuffs on the suspect. now, what led up to that shooting is still somewhat unclear. we are continuing to gather information here at the scene. there is a large perimeter in front of the bart station. i would say that there are perhaps somewhere in the vicinity of two dozen police officers that are here on the scene securing the scene and investigating at

kpix 5's devin fehely is at taylor farms in tracy tonight where this all began. devin. >> reporter: yeah. federal investigators say they have traced that e. coli outbreak to the facility behind me taylor farms pacific here in tracy. now, so far, 19 people have been made sick and investigators say that number is likely to climb. no one from the company would talk on camera but in a press release said they recalled the products out of a quota bundy dance of caution. >> i think we all put a trust in the industry and hope that there are safeguards in place to make sure those types of things don't happen. i actually shop at raley's and i did buy some of the products that were recalled. >> reporter: anna didn't get sick. but 19 others did. the e. coli outbreak affecting a wide swath of the western united states, including cases in california, colorado, washington, utah and montana as well as virginia and missouri. the outbreak left some customers questioning the safety of the food you find in your average grocery store. >> really [ indiscernible ] we can be very sick. w

kpix 5's devin fehely with a chaotic conclusion. devin. >> reporter: it was the middle of the afternoon and the middle of this then crowded parking lot here at toys 'r us that the suspect ditched that bullet retireeled suv and ran inside the store. >> he rammed a couple of cars and started driving towards me. >> he rammed cars and drove towards you. >> reporter: san jose police say they shot at the suspect and stolen suv as it barreled through this intersection ramming several cars as the driver desperately tried to escape. >> as it continued forward it instructed a marked san jose police officer's vehicle, as well. shots were fired in the direction of the suspect vehicle. >> toys 'r us he is going through the parking lot. >> reporter: the bullet-riddled suv didn't make it very far. the suspect ditched the stolen car in front of a toys 'r us about a block away as officers with the police department s.w.a.t. team and k-9 units flooded the area. >> the suspect exited the vehicle and ran into the toys 'r us store. officers entered the s
