as devin fehely explains, cases are rising nationwide including here in california. >> we're seeing thisc of monkeypox growing. >> reporter: right now, the number of cases of monkeypox in the united states is not terribly high, fewer than 500 cases nationwide and just under 100 in california but new infections dr. john schwartzberg says are popping up, doubling and tripling in just the past week. >> we're really at a very pivotal point. if we see more and more cases, we can't control them, then it's likely going to spill over into animals and we'll have a continuous problem in humans. >> reporter: in the same family of viruses that causes smallpox, monkeypox ,dr. schwartzberg says, likely originated in animals in africa before jumping to humans and eventually spreading to the united states. the disease generally causes painful blisters and lesions on the skin and spread through close contact often through sexual partners. >> the contagion occurs when the person becomes symptomatic. so that makes it much easier. with covid, we have people who are infected and can spread the virus without

. >> devin fehely, kpix 5. >> as devin mentioned the worst of the smoke remained elevated in the atmosphere, well off ground level. this is the current air quality map using all of the purple air sensors which aren't the official epa sensors but we get a good sense of what's going on, and most are registering air quality in the good category. we saw that brown smudge on the horizon, that's the smoke, but it's off the ground level, and the good news for the bay area is the winds are going to become onshore in the next several hours pushing even the elevated smoke away from us. the wind shift still in the process of occurring. the washburn fire still producing plenty of smoke. some of that smoke still being blown from east to west, but the winds are going to shift and push the smoke from west to east. shifting winds at ground level complicate the efforts of the ground crews and the weather conditions overall aren't helpful. temperatures in the mid-90s. humidity below 20%. the winds aren't that strong, but they have been shifting. they are gone from the east to the west-southwest, only gusting

in san jose, devin fehely, kpix 5. >>> developing story in contra costa county. people in pittsburg are being urged to stay inside due to poor air quality. that's because of a fire that's been burning for weeks at bay point and pittsburg. anne makovec is here with more on this lingering problem. anne? >> it's not the fire that's the problem here. it's not threatening any buildings. there are no evacuations. it's that unpredictable smoke that is causing the hazard this evening. still some pockets of thick moss burning in that marsh. chopper 5 over the scene this afternoon checking the hazy conditions. this is what people in east contra costa county are dealing with, prompting that health advisory for pittsburg today. check out this flare-up. this was saturday afternoon, sending a huge plume of smoke billowing over the area. cal fire brought in helicopters to drop thousands of gallons of water on it. access to that burn area is very limited because the ground of that marshland is just too soft for vehicles. >> it's pretty rough. we're trying to skate. yeah, it's a
