devos: period. senator murray: more than half of our public schools, your budget proposed a cut of $578 million in this funding for districts that don't adopt your proposed policy said. are you aware your budget would result in these cuts? sec. devos: i think, senator, we have a confusion here between the budget numbers that we were working with prior to the continuing resolution that was passed by congress. so the intention is to fully fund title one. sen. murray: this is a $578 million -- sec. devos: it's not -- sen. murray: this is not planned with math. we're basing our numbers on the actual real world. right now. the numbers that we passed -- sec. devos: this budget is based upon the numbers prior to that implementation in late april. sen. murray: something that was never implemented into law. this cut is $578 million less based on current law, real world. and, you know, that's -- that can't be played around with. everyone knew that the $450 million in school improvement grant funding would be

devos: yes. yes, in fact we are well , underway examining the steps we can take to accept and examine exactly what has been recommended in with regard to one of them, the look at all of the regulations, that coincides also with the president posix 's executive order to really review regulations in every the executive department. we have begun a deep dive into all of those and you have my commitment to continue that process. sen. alexander: thank you. in the authorization committee chair,ator murray and i we hope to make education a high priority soon. there has been a lot of bipartisan work within our committee for example, a dozen senators have worked to take this 108 question college application form that families 20 million fill out every year, we have an equal number of democrats and republicans ready to change this. we even have suggested, senator bennett and i, getting it down to two questions. president obama said he thought he could get rid of one-third of the questions. our staff thinks

thank you secretary devos for joining us today. secretary devos, as you know, i was very clear during your confirmation process that i had serious concerns with your extreme ideological commitment to privatization our public schools. your extensive financial conflicts of interest and your lack of understanding of the role of the federal government in protecting the civil rights of students across the country. i wasn't alone. millions of parents and teachers across the country stood up, they rallied, they sent letters, they called their senators. so much that the senate switch board was overwhelmed and made it very clear that they opposed your vision for our students and our schools and strongly supported public education in america. when it came to a vote, every single democrat voted no. we were joined by two of my republican colleagues who are long time members of this committee and the committee who cited concerns. the vice president had to come and break a tie on a cabinet nomination. secretary devos, i was hoping you would ente

that's very different from what we now see from devos. right. what we see from the trump administration. they are perverting that. they are undermining that bipartisan consensus and, on top of that, not even investing significantly either. it's the worst of all worlds. what i really emphasize is that kind of tradition is a space where it's part of the public education system, not an attempt to dismantle it. it's a space where everybody have supported it. that's where we can get a lot of things done that will be great for kids. >> we'll have to leave it there. >> can i ask -- just to be totally clear, lindsay, you would say it's okay for a school to take a voucher to discriminate against a gay child? >> my opinions aside, if i were to operate a school i wouldn't operate a school that way. but reasonable people can disagree about some of these sensitive issues. and i think marriage is a sensitive issue. at the end of the day, you know, we have federal civil rights laws in place, and yeah. >> we are past our time. i'm sorry. thank you, guys all for

michelle: betsy devos made another stop in the district today.s is a different scene that this visit. this was in february. our suzanne kennedy was at the school in southeast when devos arrived. suzanne: secretary of education betsy devos spent a good portion of her morning here at the eagle academy public charter school in southeast washington. the four-year-old school third graders. charter school, education model of which devos is a proponent. this different is one from the dcps elementary school in february. protesters tried to block her efforts to jefferson middle school to show the opposition to her education policies. after visiting both public and charter schools in the metro region, i asked the secretary the difference between the public and the charter schools. >> there are many, many great schools in this area. and all of them are trying to meet the needs of the students they are serving. my hope is that every student and every family will find the right school and the right fit for their children and their side. suzanne: this is the s

bring us up to speed on devos so far in office, and how robust the anti-devos and the accountabilityort now is. >> she was one of the most polarizing cabinet nominees who had even members of her own party vote against her. but when you look at what has happened since she has come, in certainly there is cause for alarm among democrats. not only because of the proposed cuts to the budget, which pretty much touch on everything in terms of education that you would be concerned about in terms of the future, in terms of after school programs, programs to help underprivileged children, but possibly even more troubling than that is this report which elizabeth warren herself writes about in a cnn article that the head of the federal student aid office quit and complained about political meddling. why is this really concerning? well, because that was the number one concern that senators cited about betsy devos when she came in was that she had no background in official education and the education field, but she was financially an activist, a school choice activist and a political donor. so cer

they were handing these things out like candy and now they are watching betsy devos.ompletely and totally belinda i've got to say as the millennial on this panel most of us young people we definitely have student loans. the truth of the matter is when you think about people like elizabeth warren who launched a resistance group to betsy devos for consideration i believe is to get the young people to rally when she runs for president in 2020. i know she thinks that she won't but i believe she will. she is looking to bolster her candidacy on an issue like this. totally disenfranchises the process that betsy devos is just getting in their eliminating some of these regulations that are surrounding student loans and the protection that were in place simply because some of the unscrupulous practices that were there but not anymore. >> here's the thing, we talk about a potential ticking timebomb the first quarter this year the 90-day delinquent if student loans at 11%. betsy devos may have to take some kind of critical action and there are day setting the stage. >> actually t

devos has not critics critics of the system, those who are concerned about how states have addressed this, they are hoping during critics of the system, those who are concerned about how states have addressed this, they are hoping during this process in which these plans are actually evaluated, i think thateral they make sure that there is evidence to show that, always that up to each individual state to determine that? guest: that is a really good question, and that is where it varies by district and schools. it also applies to the person is making that question and decision at the end of the day, but the real question here is in some districts, evaluation across from observation should last for 20 minutes to 30 minutes. the model they use is sometimes 50 minutes. evaluation will be at the end of the year, when kids are on their worst either, or doing just a class of activities really and we're not doing engagement and learning like in september. ,hen you do the observation prolonged the observation, etc., these are all tiny things that can very from how a teacher grades on the eval

president trump and his secretary of education are big fans of school choice, and betsy devos loves to talk about choice and has made it the centerpiece of her education agenda. said, these are complicated times in washington, and so the president's plans are no means certain to become law even in a gop-led congress. we had a panel yesterday where that was one of the points made. it is good to keep that in mind, that for all the talk, it is not at all clear what we might see at the federal level. there is still good reason to be here because as i think the panelists would tell you, most of the action is at the state level on this anyway and will continue to be so. a busy legislative session in states this year. one of our cap lists, robert ellen know -- and low, or even enlowrecently -- recently? >> i was. >> there have been efforts needed to create new programs or expand existing ones. keep in mind that the 2000 bring indid not just donald trump. the gop made gains in states and thehold what is called political trifecta with 25 states where the republic of party controls the governors
