in 2016, devry agreed to pay 100-million dollars to settle a lawsuit that claimed the university misledtudents about job placement rates. now the investigation into devry has been halted. in august secretary devos tapped a former dean at devry to oversee the investigation team. that team was created in 2016 after a scandal at corinthian colleges which ran more than 100 for profit schools in 25 states. and collected more than 1.7 billion dollars in federal student aid. corinithian colleges suddenly closed in april of 2015, leaving 16,000 students without degrees but thousands of dollars in student loans. under president obama more than 32 thousand students had their loans forgiven. in december secretary devos changed the student debt forgiveness policy making it a case-by case basis. currently college students carry nearly 1.5 trillion dollars in loans, most of which is held by the federal government. congressman john garamendi is a democrat from california's third district. it's so nice to have you with us. those are such depressing numbers across the board. let's start talking about th

university of phoenix, devry, kaplan, similar universities. 9% of high school students go to for-profit colleges and universities. 33% of all the college student loan defaults are students from for-profit colleges and universities. 9%, 33%. why? why such a dramatic difference between the percentage of kids going to these schools and those who default on student debt, 33% of whom went to the same schools? two reasons. for-profit colleges and universities overcharge the students and produce a diploma that is virtually worthless when it comes to finding a job and paying off your student loan debt. that is the reality. in the last five years, nearly every major for-profit college has been investigated or sued by more than one state attorney general and federal agency for unfair, deceptive and abusive practices. thanks to secretary devos, they don't need to worry about the department of education. the writing has been on the wall for some time. last summer, secretary devos hired devry university dean julian schmoke to be chief enforcement officer where he would oversee the enforcement unit.
