>> let me ask you about governor dewine.one of the few republican governors willing to come out throughout the covid crisis and be responsible. he was responsible, from what i can recall, from the beginning. we had him on the show several times. he talked about what he was doing in ohio. you would think that given the direction of the ohio republican party, he would be punished. but mike dewine has remained the mainstreet republican in many aspects that usually gets punished in the age of trump or in the post-trump age. how is he sitting at 46% today? >> one thing to keep in mind joe, this is a large lead that dewine has in the polling, 46. but add 29 and 17 together and you get 46. one of this thing thats that benefited him, is when this race was taking shape, was that renacci was going to have a one-on-one with dewine. he had run for the senate with trump's endorsement. he believed getting into this race, that he would take what you're describing, channel that into an endorsement from donald trump, and get a one-on-one con

now mike dewine has said nothing on this. and i'm calling on him to say what does he think about this? does he think, you know, people that are human trafficked and raped have an opportunity when they don't get to make a choice between themselves and their families and their doctor. that's how extreme it's getting in ohio. ohio is a pro-choice state. we had a poll about four years ago that showed that 61% of ohioains believe in women's choice. these kind of extreme ideas where mike dewine is in the hospital room is a big problem for ohio women across the state. >> can you sketch out your position on this? where do you draw limits on the issue of abortion? >> well, look, i think that we need to make sure we have access. i've fought with pro choice ohio and planned parenthood to keep our clinics open. i think it's a personal decision for women. i don't think government should be involved in it. i think it should be between the doctor and the family and the woman that is going through this. i thought that my entire career. we do

, and they lost to dewine in a pretty clear matchup. generally been seeing in the month of may so far. >> why do you think perdue is struggling? >> there are a few reasons perdue is struggling, not the least of which brian kemp is popular in the state. look at trump's endorsement of perdue. what does that make you do essentially? does it make you more supportive of perdue? we see 37% of voters, republican voters in georgia say, yeah, it does. then add up this 24%, which is less supportive of perdue, a very large number in the republican primary, and the no effect at 36%. you get a majority of voters, republican primary voters in the state of georgia saying that endorsement that trump made either makes them less supportive of trump's candidate or no effect. and here's the thing i will also note, which is bring this out nationally. bring this out nationally, jake, and what do we see? look, trump is still a popular guy nationally among republicans. this is his very favorable rating, not just the like, this is the love. we really love trump

i mean, trump owns the ohio gop sort of, dewine won, the incumbent republican governor on the other side adjacent gop gubernatorial candidates did not win. trump is going to do best when he endorses in multicandidate scramble primaries. that's where his candidate can stand out and emerge to get the guy up to 30%, 32%. but winning a majority like in georgia, for example, where brian kemp is running comfortably ahead of david pe perdue, the trump-endorsed candidate, trump isn't going to fly. so it's a state by state and really, multiprimary versus incumbent primary issue at play. >> let me break down the wonk and put a -- bring a little more perspective. j.d. vance, did, he was propelled from third place, 11% in march up to a third of the vote. that's great. but he won around 350,000 votes. there are nearly 6 million voters in ohio in the last general election, and so it speaks to the fact that even with trump's endorsement he just gets a third, and you're talking about a very small percentage of the total electorate. trump is incredibly powerful in closed party primaries. a quarter of vot
