dhs is in desperate need of principal leadership. the turmoil and then certainly at dhs headquarters has only been compounded by the growing security threats that are facing our nation. in recent weeks we saw a widespread cyber breach of our federal government and a terrible attack on the capitol building, all while we continued to battle a raging pandemic that's taking the lives of thousands of americans. so whether it is bolstering cybersecurity, combating the rights of domestic terrorism including white supremacists and antigovernment violence, controlling the coronavirus pandemic or tackling longer-term threats like climate change, our nation needs an experienced homeland security secretary. mr. mayorkas from your record as a national security official is extensive. you have the support of former homeland security secretaries and law enforcement organizations including the fraternal order of the police. you've also been entrusted to help lead the department before and i've been confirmed by the senate three times. in those roles

i believe he is uniquely qualified to face the challenges before dhs. he offers a diverse ground and set of experiences in both the private and public sectors that are going to serve him well. he was born in cuba, fled with his family to the united states in 1960. he attended the university of california at berkeley where he earned a bachelors degree with distinction in 1981. he earned a law degree from loyola law school in 1985. i first met him in the 90's when i recommended him to president clinton for the position of u.s. attorney for the central district of california. in that role, he tried numerous cases from cybercrime to money laundering to immigration fraud. given his stellar work and own personal story as an immigrant from cuba, president obama nominated mr. mayorkas in 2009 to be director of the u.s. citizenship and immigration services. in that role, he administered our immigration laws while preserving our legacy as a nation of immigrants. his that she successfully implemented the deferred action for tryout -- for childhood arrivals program

to the extent dhs was involved in fact when i was secretary, it would have been giving cybersecurity advice to states. but that was still in the very early stage of learning about this set of problems. elliot: so now that you look back from your time as the secretary to today, how do you think that has changed? michael: i think it has changed in a number of respectful so first of all,--number of respects. first of all, there was a concern in the run-up to the last election with actual terrorist attacks on voting processes, meaning would somebody try to go and disrupt people waiting on line to vote in a particular location or committing an act of violence. that has been true of domestic extremism and the concern about efforts on the part of some extremists to interfere with voting in areas they feel are unfavorable to their preferred candidate. that is a new consideration that did not just when i was there for the disinformation, whether mounted by foreign adversaries or domestic actors, was not a real issue went i was at dhs. now it is a very big issue. it started in 2016 when the ru

and so that's what dhs is worried about. well, they view that as a test run. and meanwhile, the republicans are saying, let's move on, not a big deal. that seems to them as an apology or a runway for the next thing. and that's what you're essentially reading in the dhs bulletin. is, this wasn't over. they don't view this as a failure. they view this as, wow, we tried, we got through, doesn't seem so bad. a couple of people got arrested. and let's continue with this mission that is essentially embraced by, you know, fox news and trump down in florida and essentially, you know, some major senators. >> chairman, we know that some members of congress have increased their security or have had their security increased, particularly as they travel back and forth to their districts. how concerned would you be? >> well, this is not the first time we've had members around the country who have higher exposure to some kind of violence. but this is a little bit difference, because, again, these were groups -- by the way, they weren't republicans before trump. they really w

trump's fbi and dhs has said this is the main problem in relation to terrorist violence that our nationeeds to address. >> how are statistics on the size of groups as this reliably gathered since nobody is answering surveys about membership and the like? how do we really know? kathleen: here is one thing to keep in mind. since the early 1980's this movement has been using a strategy called leaderless resistance. this will sound familiar to listeners i think because it is effectively the same thing we are familiar with as cell-styled terrorism in the post-9/11 moment. the idea is one or a few white power activists would work toward a common set of goals but without communication with other cells and communication with -- without communication with central leadership. that strategy did a number of important things. it made it very difficult for us to describe and document the white power movement violence as it happened, because we instead see a lot of stories about lone wolves, when in fact we are seeing movement motivated violence, but it also means there is not a great correlation betw
