what exactly are the concerns you're hearing from dhs officials?rter: well, ana, i'm able to illustrate it to you perfectly right here where i'm standing in lukeville, arizona. this has been the epicenter of what has become a record high in migrant crossings. 12,000 migrants crossing the border undocumented in a single day last week. the numbers continue to be high, about 2,600 migrants a day in this tucson sector alone. you can sigh behind me, i'm going to step here so our cameras can zoom in. we've seen probably 100 migrants in the last hour come through here where they're processed from these tents. they are then put in these vans. they are then going to be taken to a processing center and released. what these dhs officials are worried about is that if they make detention mandatory, which is what's being discussed and negotiated on the hill is that those processing centers would fill up. they would send them to ice, those would fill up. in part because a lot of these migrants are coming from countries that won't take them back. places like venez

and that's been an assessment that's been done by dhs, the fbi, joint threat assessment. however, that heightened threat environment that we're operating in today is really the concern for law enforcement. so what they have to do is they have to look at the totality of the threat environment, indicators of what is going on, you know, fueled by -- you know, the conflict in the middle east, the israeli-hamas conflict, how does that impact the security considerations for these large-scale events which dhs has indicated they are a target of opportunity that could be focused in on by malicious actors. there's a lot that's going on in the background, really focused around intelligence gathering. that intelligence gathering is going to look for new emerging threats and types of attack methodology that could be deployed against these types of events in turn nypd, other law enforcement entities, will be working to mitigate that, and we're seeing that as the reporting just stated. the threat of nonviolent or direct action by protesters has necessitated that the security zone around

dhs officials tell nbc news more than 12,000 migrants crossed the u.s./mexico border on monday.st number in history. and now an appeals court has blocked the federal government from destroying razor wire that texas planted along the rio grande to deter migrants. nbc's julia ainsley continues to follow this story for us. so border patrol agents say they are overwhelmed. what are you hearing? >> well, yeah, i've got a new stat to share with you. again, we had another record day yesterday, over 11,000 illegal crossings, and more than 12,000 crossings overall when you count those who entered between legal ports of entry. the new and probably most important stat is that cpp, customs and border protection is now at their largest number of holding migrants in their custody. over 26,000 migrants. that means that these places are being pushed past capacity. they're trying to process migrants as quickly as they can and a lot of times taking them to processing centers away away from the border, driving them maybe two hours from the border in arizona to try to get up to tucson. this is basi
