diablo. we have team coverage. ktvu's tara moriarty is cover, the dozens of people forced out of their homes. we begin with alex savidge near clayton where more help is on the way. good morning, alex. >> reporter: a lot more help is coming out here to help out the crews. the fire has grown in size, nearly doubled in size overnight. the only bit of good news is that the fire is burning away from where homes are in this area which is just outside of clayton where we are this morning. what it is doing, is almost going straight up mt. diablo. it's been burning up in some of these steep canyons overnight. there's structures and a communications tower up there. crews are standing by to protect the structures. so far, the weather teams to be cooperating, we have light winds out here. the morgan fire has now burned about 1500 acres. it nearly doubled in size since yesterday. hand crews were out overnight. they've been able to build containment line around 10% of the fire's edge. more help is coming.

diablo. overnight, the fire doubled in size since it broke out yesterday afternoon around 1:30 and we just received new numbers on how big the fire is right now. so far, it has burned more than 3,000 acres. these are live pictures of some of the fire lines from newschopper2. crews are getting a handle on it and right now it's 20% contained and nearly 100 homes are under a mandatory evacuation. rosemary orozco is tracking the fire conditions and brian flores is talking to evacuees. we begin our coverage with tara moriarty who joins us live near the fire lines in clayton. good afternoon, tara. >> reporter: good afternoon. we're at the end of curry canyon. you can see the ridge up there. we've noticed flames leap up over the ridge several times since we've been here for the of past couple of hours. now it seems it's quieting down. the smoke is a whitish color. it appears things are getting better. it's lows smoky than it was a couple of hours ago. the wind had picked up. it's erratic. a care car

diablo. right now it's 45% contained. so far, the fire has burned 3,243 acres. still, 75 homes are threatened but that number is down compared to 100 homes threatened yesterday. we have ktvu team coverage. rosemary is in the weather center monitoring conditions and how they could help the firefighters today. we will begin with alex savidge who just spoke to a homeowner who lives near the fire line. >> reporter: a lot of people in this area thought they were in the clear but then last night, the winds picked up and this fire really flared up in a big way. it rail racing down the hillside behind us, right up to morgan trt road. and this is -- morgan territory road. people who live here told me they actually turned on their sprinklers, grabbed a hose and started to pray down their trees in their front yard hoping it wouldn't catch fire. in the end, it didn't. they are grateful to the firefighters. >> they are heroes. i have goose bumps. i don't know what else we can do to thank them. last night

you can see the flames 1500 acres have now been torched near mount diablo. more people were forced out of their homes, as well. we have team coverage of the fire this morning. brian hackney will have the latest on the fire conditions but we begin with cate caugiran who spoke to fire officials just a short while ago. cate, what's the latest? >> reporter: we understand michelle that this fire is actually making a push towards the summit and that's something we have seen all this morning. but i want to show you work at this plume of smoke, this impressive calm as it continues to rise as this fire climbs toward the peak of mount diablo. as far as evacuations go, the sheriff's office says 24 more homes were evacuated in the area. the first round of evacuations were started at morgan territory road 1:30 yesterday afternoon so so far, approximately 100 families are waking up unsure of when they can go home. today more firefighters are expected to come towards this area so we can see or expect to see 500 on the line today. the first air tankers will be up in an hour
