joining us now from haltern, germany is cnn's diana magnay. na, the principal of the school where the teachers and students went said the school has been changed forever. >> reporter: he did. he said that he sent 16 happy students off last week and now this tragedy. 16 students all of whom were around 16 years old and in tenth grade. 14 of them girls, went off to spain on a language exchange. the spanish students were here in the town of haltern last december never to come back. you see the tributes their friends and school mates have been laying on the ground. the memorial has been growing the past few days. a moment of silence at 10:53 local time. the time flight 9525 crashed. held across schools in the region of north reine. the 150 from 18 different countries as far as we know. the mayor of haltern gave a distraught press conference. let's have a listen to what he told us. >> i'm here and i can talk with people and with the parents and the brothers and sisters. the only thing that i can do is to be here. >> reporter: christine, lufthansa ha

students and two teachers on that flight southbound's diana magnay. what's the latest? >> reporter: christine, 72 people from germany who lost their lives according to the latest toll. you say 18 of them from this town. i'm in front of the gymnasium where you see the memorial to the pupils who lost their lives. all day, so far, classmates have been coming to pay respects to the friends they lost. signs up saying things like "why." this is a town in mourning. if you go to the church a similar memorial in the church. a book of condolences. the children at this school have special trauma counselors and psychologists on hand to try to get them through this time. there will be a moment of silence held at the exact time the plane went down in schools across the region of germany and

cnn's diana magnay is with us in dusseldorf. diana, you were at his family home in montabaur last week. what are the family and friends saying about the copilot? >> reporter: investigators of the state prosecutor here in dusseldorf are hoping and are led to expect to give some statement today about the update on the investigation. from my time in montabaur, it is clear at the gliding club lubitz was passionate about flying. what would appear this medical condition which the prosecutor confirmed lubitz had on friday did seem to impact possibly the future of flying. as you said there are various reports that have come out over weekend citing officials close to the investigation that said anti-depressants were found in the apartment. lots of prescription drugs. he had personal writings there to suggest some kind of psycho illness and characterized this illness as a severe psychosis and burnout syndrome. this type of complaint is cited in the french newspaper. we have not been able to confirm any of that yet. we are trying very hard.

i want to bring in our diana magnay who's in andrei lubitz's hometown. i don't know if you know any more about these clinic visits that he was actually making possibility to the university clinic. but they're saying he was not treated for depression. do we know if it means just there? maybe he was being treated for something else there. did he have a regimen there at that clin ache and maybe something somewhere else? >> reporter: we know that he went to the dusseldorf university medical center for a diagnosis of some sort. in february and march the 10th this year. march the 10th, which was a tuesday -- the tuesday before last. and they specifically said this was not a diagnosis for depression. so that is fairly clear. he did not go to the dusseldorf medical center because of depression. he went there for some other medical condition and we don't know what that is. it's quite possible he was receiving treatment for other conditions elsewhere. who knows? but the dusseldorf medical center says he came here twice, this year for a diagnosis, it was for a medi

cnn's diana magnay is in germany this morning to tell us more. >> reporter: hi carol. well that's all i can tell you about these americans, just that two have been confirmed as having been on board. as you said we don't know their names, where they came from. we will be following up on that information, but we do have fresh numbers from the ceo of german wings as to the numbers of people from which country were killed. we know that 72 from germany and 37 he says, from spain. in fact the spanish interior ministry suggests it was a little more than that. obviously this flight was flying from barcelona to dusseldorf germany, the worst affected. great britain has confirmed one dead. the netherlands, colombia australia, argentina are beginning to learn more about the people who are killed. i'm here in this town and the school behind me lost 16 exchange students who had been on a language exchange program in spain and were coming back from a week away. the headmaster said tragically they left here 16 happy students. now we have this terrible tragedy. all morning the students

so let's get to diana magnay in germany with more for us. diana?uch about the identities of the pilots and the co-pilot. germanwings and lufthansa both for obvious reasons being tight-lipped about their identities and nationalities, we know that both were men. the pilot had 6,000 hours of flight time behind him. he has been with germanwings since may of 2014. and prior to that had flown with lufthansa and condor. we know the co-pilot had 630 hours of flight time. behind him and had trained at the lufthansa aviation center in bremen which is where lufthansa trains most pilots the company unwilling to speculate on the arguments, the lines coming out from media reports about what went on in the cockpit. but there will be a germanwings press conference at 9:30 eastern time. back to you. >> very important press conference indeed. cnn will cover it. this is all about the dignity of those who died 150 people on board flight 9525. and now we know it went from thinking there were no americans, to two americans and now at least three americans involved. two
