cnn's diana magnay is live outside the prosecutor's office in dusseldorf. good morning, diana. >> reporter: good morning, john. exactly, andreas lubitz wrote to his flight school explaining to them that he had suffered a severe bout of depression. lufthansa says that they only found this e-mail now and have handed it over to the public prosecutor here in dusseldorf. the question is of course did the flight school did lufthansa, take that e-mail into account when they certified him as fit to fly a few days after the accident? lufthansa said he was 100% fit to fly with no qualifications whatsoever. so it does raise many questions about whether lufthansa took this e-mail seriously enough and how it weighed up his medical and psychological health. for you, we're also finding out new details from a source close to the investigation about what the girlfriend of andreas lubitz has been telling investigators. she apparently has been saying that she knew of his psychological problems but had been optimistic that the two could work through them together. also that lub

. >>> meantime diana magnay is outside the prosecutor's office in dusseldorf. good morning, diana. >> reporter: hi, john. well lufthansa issued a statement yesterday, last night, confirming that they had handed over an e-mail to the prosecutor which was an e-mail from andreas lubitz back in 2009 to his flight school in which he told them that he had suffered a bout of severe depression. now, lufthansa has said that it found this e-mail now. it can't give any further details on whether this e-mail was taken into account when he was examined for his medical license. and to a extent -- sorry, pilot's license. to a certain extent it raises more questions than it closes. but of course questions over how much lufthansa knew about his condition, whether it had taken his depression into account, or whether it had overlooked these details. car cars carstens the ceo, who will be speaking from the site just 36 hours after the incident that lubitz was 100% fit to fly. all this whilst cnn are learning from sources close to the investigation about details the girlfriend has b

. >> our diana magnay joins us from dusseldorf to talk about this and other aspects of trying to answer questions as to why the plane went down. we'll get to that -- those reports about the video in a moment. first let's talk about the pilot. lufthansa admitted it knew the pilot suffered from depression but only after an internal investigation. why did they initially claim he was fit to fly? >> reporter: well, because they knew he'd had this bout of depression but still deemed him when he took his examination in 2012 for his pilot's license, deemed to fly. so as far as lufthansa was concerned, with arm -- armed with this knowledge that he had admitted to him that he'd had a severe bout of depression, they deemed him fit to fly. it's than they changed the story. they took the information into account when they made the assessments as to whether to grant him his pilot's license and granted him the license. it's only that the information has only come to us now. the chain of events was the following -- the prosecutor told us that he had had a bout of depression prior to gaining his license
