i'm diane dwyer. >>> for dozens of families in san bruno, this past week brought up some terrible memories. as two pipeline ex lotions rocked parts of the nation. tonight there are new questions about the safety of the millions of miles of pipelines running under our neighborhoods and our cities. monte francis is in san bruno tonight with the story for us. >> reporter: diane, people here in san bruno are rebuilding and trying to move on following the events of last september. this week brought new tragedies and new doubts about the safety of pipelines nationwide. >> oh, my god, this is beyond belief. >> reporter: the gas line explosion late thursday night shook the town of hanoverton, ohio. it followed a horrific scene in pennsylvania just a day earlier. >> i heard this awful bang. and i thought my roof fell down. >> reporter: five people were killed after an 83-year-old underground gas main exploded, damaging or destroying 47 homes and businesses. the cause is still under investigation. meanwhile, federal investigators have determined the cause of the explosion in san bruno last september

i'm diane dwyer. it's known as one of the centers of tourism in san francisco. the ferry building is now at the focus of a debate over the rights of homeless people in the city. security guards are keeping handlers off the property now. monty francis joins us in san francisco with the latest. >> reporter: the port of san francisco hired those security guards after merchants made a series of complaints about the homeless. now, those security guards are keeping watch and keeping transients off the property. business owners said they noticed influx of homeless people at the ferry building after the terminal closed last year. merchants complained homeless were setting up camp, setting up tip jars and bothering patrons and using bathrooms. all that the merchants said was a nuisance to customers and bad for business. the port's response has reignited the debate how to deal with the city's homeless population. >> it may cost the city a lot of money to do it but good from the tourists aspect. from my perspective, i'm used to seeing panhandlers and people bundling around

i'm diane dwyer. protestors remain in the streets of cairo tonight although the crowds have thinned a bit. in the meantime they made the most of what they hope will be many concessions but dissolving the parliament today and suspending the constitution. >> reporter: less than two days after hosni mubarak resigned as president of the country, the military in control of egypt took some of the decisive quicksteps protestors had been asking for. they suspended the constitution, they dissolved parliament and announced they'd hold presidential elections in six months and they would in control until those elections. they didn't do some of the things that protestors had been asking, including lifting the emergency law in this country that was declared decades ago by mubarak as well as mentioning the release of some of the political prisoners here. there were still protestors in the streets today. in tahrir square there were thousands. the military police are trying to restore normalcy in this country. with th

. >> i'm diane dwyer in for jessica aguirre. it is raining. there's a wind advisory here in the bay area and snow? the sierra. this is just the beginning. we have team coverage tonight of the storm. jean elie has a look at the impact of the wind and the rain. but we begin in the weather center with chief meteorologist jeff ranieri. >> rainfall in the north bay and slowly moving to the south. but one thing that's been constant is that widespread wind topping 60 in some cases. in berkeley with those streets wet and moderate to pockets of heavier rainfall that has been falling throughout tonight. certainly motorists taking it a little bit extra slow here with that rain continuing. let's look at the computer with wi winds. napa, 57. san francisco airport, 43-mile-per-hour wind gusts. also oakland. that will continue throughout this morning. we have that wind advisory for the entire area. it's picked up heavier rainfall and highway 101 also on 280. and this extends over to oakland. on i-680. some of the heaviest rainfall we're currently monitoring

i'm diane dwyer. well, if you stepped outside at all today, you probably noticed it felt more like june than february. in fact, the bay area's on track to set some records this weekend. beautiful out there. let's check in with rob mayeda to check what's going on. >> pretty amazing day around the bay area, from san jose to san francisco and oakland. records smashed around the bay area. right now still 74 degrees in san jose. a little breezy. west wind at 10 miles an hour. into oakland, another stop, seeing temperatures in the low 70s right now. 72 degrees. and northwest wind at close to 7 miles per hour. so some of today's highs, breaking records. san jose got up to 75 degrees. low 70s around san francisco and oakland. moffit field as well getting up to 75 degrees. look the north bay, napa 80 degrees. the reason why it was so warm, high pressure aloft. as the air drops down to sea level it warms up and dries out. fortunately the patterns can also include gusty winds. we'll talk more about the wind advi

i'm diane dwyer. tens of thousands of giants fans flood the ballpark today. so many showed up, they had to shut it down. elise kershner is in san francisco for what this may mean for the entire city. >> reporter: organizers say just a few years ago they were lucky if 5,000 fans showed up for this evented. last year it got a little bit better, 25,000 folks showed up. this year, so many people came here, they had to turn people away at one point. not only that, but a record number of single-game tickets were sold here today. they showed up at the crack of dawn. some waiting for hours to catch a glimpse of the giants. >> really weird seeing them in person compared to on tv. but cool. >> reporter: brian wilson, the catcher buster posey, seemed more like opening day in april than fanfest. >> very, very crowded. the lines are very long for autographs. very long to get in. everybody's pushing each other. >> reporter: so crowded, that the free event got shut down temporarily to allow lines to disperse. >> a great crowd all day. >> reporter: with an estimated 40,000 f

i'm diane dwyer. a chilly, wet weekend across the bay area, as a winter storm stays locked in. we saw some very low snow in the east and south bay, meaning some people didn't have to go very far to see that snow. at the same time the winds and rain just didn't let up, causing problems for homeowners and drivers as well. nbc bay area's elyce kirchner joins us in san francisco with the latest tonight. elyce? >> reporter: hi, diane. earlier from the oakland hills, we saw the rain coming down. we even saw snow in the berkeley hills this afternoon. now it's all cleared up and the rain stopped just in time for the chinese new year's parade. loud snaps of firecrackers go off as tens of thousands line the wet pavement in san francisco's chinatown. >> we're just out here to watch the parade. >> reporter: watching the parade, despite the blustery wind and soggy cold. >> it's cold. and there's a parade happening right there. look right over there, there's a parade. >> reporter: billed as the largest chinese cultural event held outside of china, it did not disappoint. >> the rain stopped s

i'm diane dwyer. snow fell in parts of the bay area today, but nothing like the forecast called for. well, now the temperatures are headed down again. we have team coverage on this cold snap. kimberly terry tells us house nurseries are preparing for all this. but we check in first with rob mayeda. >> record-breaking temperatures early this morning. 20s out in san rafael, 28 degrees, napa 27, 34 in oakland and 35 at sfo airport. it was around twin peaks in san francisco we had the dusting of snow overnight. even around san jose, early in the morning, but mainly just some rain. but notice what happened during the day today. we had pretty intense showers rolling through. morgan hill and san martin. brent canon reporting showers near morgan hill this afternoon, and snow falling in hollister and gilroy. we'll share that later in the newscast of snow, mixed with heavy rain. the showers have started to weaken. this is part of the stage that will set things up for a chilly night tonight. we have a freeze warn

i'm diane dwyer. we've got snow and rain, freezing temperatures, and wind. we've seen just about everything today in the bay area. nbc bay area's elise kirshner is in the east bay. let's check the weather right now with meteorologist rob mayeda. >> these numbers just over my shoulder impressive. we were talking about the sie a sierra, but we're not, we're talking about mount hamilton, already a half foot of snow coming down today. four inches around mount diablo. the santa cruz mountains, five inches of snow. here's the interesting point of the evening. you can see the bay area is under a winter weather advisory of the east bay hills and santa cruz mountains. not the sierra. at this hour we have more snow flowing around the sierra, as most of the moisture from the cold alaskan system is sitting over the central coast. there you see the snow from the santa cruz mountains, not quite to high way 17, but getting close. there you see all the snow around mount hamilton and off to the east still some snow around mount diablo. eventually we'll catch the break coming

i'm diane dwyer. the three uc berkeley graduates accused of spying in iran face their first day of trial today. they all pleaded not guilty to the charges. but getting any additional information out of iran is proving to be difficult. mare r marianne favro joins us with more. >> this took place in iran's revolutionary court. sarah shourd, who was released earlier on $500,000 bail, was not there. her two friends, josh fattal and shane bauer, were at the court today. no members of the media were allowed in. in fact, there was a blanket ban on any observers going into the courts, including the swiss ambassador who represents u.s. interests in iran. she told nbc news she was very frustrated she couldn't get any information or find out what was happening touring the proceedings. the lawyer for josh and shane said if they were going to be released on bail that probably would have happened today. and it didn't. so the court case is moving forward. but just to give you and background the judge presiding over

i'm diane dwyer. we have new information tonight about the search for the man who kidnapped and killed a 4-year-old boy from the central valley town of patterson last month. detectives say they found the body of a man this morning floating in the delta men dote a canal. these are live pictures of the scene. the description of the body matches that of the suspected kidnapper jose rodriguez. an autopsy on the body is scheduled tuesday. rodriguez snatched 4-year-old juliani cardenas a month ago and drove into the canal. juliani's body was found earlier this month. about 1,000 people gathered for a memorial service for the little boy. >>> san francisco police found a 65-year-old man dead inside his home on knob hill, and tonight they say they are searching for his killer. police received a call last night asking them to check on the man at his apartment on bush street near jones in the lower knob hill neighborhood. officers arrived and found the 65-year-old man dead with signs of trauma to his body. neigh

good evening, i'm diane dwyer in tonight for jessica aguirre. >> and i'm raj mathai.ly seems like winter weather again. the bay area is on storm watch. rain, wind and a messy forecast. and it's barrelling toward the bay area as we speak. let's bring in chief meteorologist jeff ranieri. how much? >> the second round will be arriving. the storm door completely open right across the west. as we zoom in, what we'll find is the beginnings of rainfall right off the northern california coastline. that is round two of this second more powerful system that will start rainfall here across the bay area as we head into tuesday morning. so what can you expect? for that morning commute, periods of rain. winds 15 to 20. and possibly a half inch to an inch of rainfall as that rain increases throughout the day. and anyone traveling to the sierra, treacherous traveling continues with potentially one to two feet of snow and winds that could top 60 miles per hour. we'll have your hour-by-hour rain forecast coming up. >>> and our continuing storm coverage anytime online at nbcbayarea.com

i'm diane dwyer. it's been the kind of week people in the bay area just might be talking about for quite some time. partly for what didn't show up. the forecast predicted snow at sea level hasn't happened. but the temperatures broke all kinds of record lows. and it is cold again tonight. rod mayeda has a look at the cold freeze. hello, rob. >> overnight we were watching the snow flurries in parts of the bay area, not sticking at sea level, but wet snowflakes coming down, and the skies cleared this morning. we set new record lows across the north bay. we did see temperatures drop in a few spots into the 20s. this morning around san rafael, 28 degrees. 27 in napa. that's one of the highlights heading into tonight. our agricultural concerns in the east bay valleys. wild weather today. we did get another round of some wet snowflakes and ice pellet showers around morgan hill, san martin and gilroy and hollister. the instability is dropping across the hill tops, so the showers will be shutting down setting

i'm diane dwyer. and we begin along the embarcadero in san francisco. we're learning that the city is stepping up security at the popular ferry building to better deal with the homeless issue there. and tonight there is also a growing debate over the rights of those individuals who some say have nowhere else to go. nbc bay area's monte francis joins us with more. >> reporter: this move to keep the homeless out of the ferry building has angered some and pleased others, and it's reignited a familiar debate. security guards keep a close watch over the ferry building with strict orders to keep transients off the property. that comes as a relief to ashley robins who works at a gelato store inside the building. >> we would often get the homeless people. we call them the tip thieves because there is a group that comes by. they'll wait until all of us have our backs turn and steal money out of our tip jar. >> reporter: ferry merchants said they noticed an influx of homeless people after the old terminal closed last year. owners complained that the homeless were

i'm diane dwyer. an afternoon adventure turned deadly for two teenagers who tried to go rafting in a drainage canal in walnut creek. crews found the raft at the spill place of the canal near treat and bancroft in walnut creek. elise kershner has more on the story. >> reporter: it's such a tragedy. they just released the young victims' names. 16-year-old matthew miller and 17-year-old gavin powell. i want to show you now a photo of gavin powell. both powell and miller decided to go rafting yesterday afternoon in a two-person inflatable raft. they launched into the creek behind nearwood elementary school at about 2:00 p.m. crews found the deflated raft this morning in the canal near bancroft and treat in concord. then around 311:30, miller's boy was discovered. authorities found powell's body two hours later near stanwill drive, nauls concord. investigators say the creek's water level can vary from two feet up to 15 feet during storms. and with the significant undertow, the raft could have easily been d

i'm diane dwyer. let's check in with meteorologist rob mayeda with a look for us. hello, rob. >> a beautiful evening. another record-breaking day around the bay area. well saw temperatures fall no matter where you were around the bay area. right now even san francisco still pretty toasty. we're at 68 degrees, down from a record high today of, get this, 77 degrees in downtown san francisco. san jose also set a record today at 77 degrees. and look at oakland, 81 degrees around the east bay. hayward 80 degrees. the top spot today santa rosa soaring up to 83 degrees. napa a new record high of 80. right now obviously the skies are clear. you just saw that from san francisco. but i'm tracking two big changes showing up as we go to the workweek. first a big cooldown on the way. we'll start to see that tomorrow, and yes, rain showing up once again in the seven-day forecast. despite all the warm temperatures we had today, big changes rolling in soon. we'll show you those coming up in the full forecast in a few minutes. >> thanks, rob. >>> they're accused of espionage in ira

i'm diane dwyer. 10,000 people ran at least part of the half marathon in san francisco today. one man from the east bay down of orinda collapsed at the finish line and died. and tonight nbc bay area is learning that many witnesses say the medical response to that emergency was slow at best. nbc bay area reporter elise kirschner joins us from orinda with the latest. >> reporter: his family tonight understandably are in shock. they did not want the talk to the media. dozens of family and friends are all at peter hoskins' orinda home which is just a few miles away from where i am standing, and they had no comment. just this morning, 36-year-old peter hoss was running a half marathon, and tonight his family and friends are mourning his loss. here is video of him being interviewed back in february 2009, talking about his company, pet sport usa. a wholesale pet supply store that he ran with his wife. hoss competed in the kaiser permanente half marathon this morning in san francisco at a very fast rate. the 13.1 mile course winds through golden gate park and draws an estimated 10,000
