. >>> good evening, i'm diane dwyer. we begin tonight in san jose, where one person is dead and six are hurt. after a car accident at a nursing home. it happened just before 10:00 this morning. a 90-year-old woman who was visiting a relative at the nursing home accidentally crashed her car into an exercise room. she was apparently arriving at the amber wood gardens nursing home a few blocks from the westgate mall, when police say she likely hit the gas pedal instead of the brakes while she was parking. >> i turned around, and i see her car halfway through our activity room. and you see wheelchairs being pushed by the car and just -- i don't know, it was scary. >> authorities have not yet released the name of the person who died. they did say the victim is an 89-year-old female. the caregiver was treated and released, and the fire department told staffers that two of the other injuries are serious. >> i'm praying for luck. when you get older and you get a trauma, you never know. but i'm certainly praying for that. >> the

i'm diane dwyer. we're on at a special time because of the u.s.pen. >>> on this father's day dozens of volunteers joined the father of missing nursing student michelle lei to continue to search for her. police have classified the case as a homicide but the family made it clear they won't stop looking for her and hoping for her safe return. marc klaas, whose daughter polly was killed in petaluma in 1993, has joined the search and his nonprofit foundation is helping as well. father's day is always difficult for klaas, and today michelle's father talked about his one wish for his daughter. >> there's nothing i want more on fathers day than to have michelle here. i have never asked for a present on fathers day ever. she hasn't forgotten one yet. i never asked for a present but i will ask for one. i would love to have her here. >> lei was last seen three weeks ago leaving kaiser hospital in hayward where she was a nursing student. >>> if this were a typical father's day, brian stow would have packed a cooler and taken his kids to the coliseum to watch

i'm diane dwyer. we begin tonight with new information about the amtrak crash near reno, this weekend. we're learning more about the safety history of the trucking company involved in that crash and what investigators are using now to determine the cause of the crash. so far, six people are confirmed dead, and officials are still trying to track down 28 other people who may have been on that train and may be unaccounted for. one of the dead is the driver of the truck. we're told he worked for john davies trucking of nevada, a company with at least two citations in the last two yo years. one truck was involved in an accident last year and one was taken off the road because of bald tires. investigators say it could be a year before they know why the tractor trailer skidded the length of a football field before smashing through crossing gates and into the zephyr train. >> our mission is not just to figure out what happened but why it happened and to recommend changes to prevent it from ever happening aga

. >>> good evening, i'm diane dwyer. the problem for united airlines and the lines at sfo will likely continue through the entire weekend. flight delays from that massive computer shutdown stranded thousands of passengers throughout the world and delayed or cancelled more than 150 flights. now, united is trying to get all those folks where they need to go. monty francis is at sfo with an update tonight. monty? >> diane, i just counted more than a dozen departing flights that are delayed here tonight at sfo, and two that are cancelled. the situation is improving here, but travelers, some passengers are still trying to figure out their travel plans. the computers are back up and running, now the system is just trying to catch up from the mess that started last night, from the computers that control flight departures. thousands of passengers were stranded at sfo. the airport duty manager said there were a large number of people who slept here in the terminal last night. and passengers we talked to say they continue to be fr

. -- captions by vitac -- www.vitac.com i'm diane dwyer. we begin with the deadly train accident. federal investigators wrapped up a news conference moments ago. speed may have been a factor in the crash. semitruck traveled faster than the speed limit we're told. we're told there are still 28 people who purchased tickets for that train and as of now are still unaccounted for. it's also possible they were not on the train at the time of the accident. officials are concerned that at least some of them may have died. six people are confirmed dead. one of the dead is the driver of the truck. we're told he worked for john daly's trucking in nevada, a company with seven safety violations but not involving the same truck. authorities also say the train was traveling at 78 miles an hour before the crash. the speed limit in that area of nevada for the train is 80 miles an hour. >> the motor carrier operations team has been reviewing records on the company, have found they have been involved in 19 rap dom roadside inspections since december 2010. out of those 19 random inspections, they hav

i'm diane dwyer. today marks the 30th anniversary of the aids epidemic. on june 5th, 1981, the federal government released a report documenting the first cases of what would come to be known as aids. more than one million americans are now living with hiv, and here in the bay area, thousands of people are taking part in one of the country's biggest aids fundraisers. nbc bay area's monte francis is in san francisco with the story for us. hello, monte. >> reporter: diane, we're here in the castro which has really been at the center of the aids awareness movement for the past 30 years. you can see a pink ribbon, the universal symbol for aids awareness. 30 years ago the federal government issued a warning about a rare pneumonia affecting gay men. the disease would later come to be known as aids. today to coincide with the anniversary, 2500 cyclists left san francisco, and will spend the next week riding all the way to los angeles as part of the annual aids life cycle ride. this year the ride is expected to raise a record $13 million for aids research. it's th

i'm diane dwyer. in less than an hour, johannes mehserle could walk out of the los angeles county jail a free man. he is the former bart officer viced of shooting and killing a man on a bart platform two years ago. it's expected jail officials will release him some time between midnight and very early tomorrow morning. tonight in oakland, hundreds of people protested. nbc bay area's monte francis is in downtown oakland with that story for us. monte? >> reporter: diane, good evening. business owners had feared that there would be violence and looting tonight, so they boarded up their windows, just in case. while the protest here tonight was loud and boisterous, much to everyone's relief, it was peaceful. >> the people united will never be defeated! >> reporter: at least 200 protesters marched from the fruitvale bart station to downtown oakland where they blocked the intersection of broadway and 14th. once there, speakers criticized police and held signs that referred to racist and killer cops. >> execu

i'm diane dwyer. >>> sarah shourd spoke out today about her two friends still being held in iran andudicial process there. kimberly terry's live with more for us. >> reporter: sarah shourd showed up at her alma mate tore speak and about 60 people came to hear her. the crowd was quite diverse. about 50 or 60 people showed up. a big crowd. some say they came to show their support, others say they travel in the middle east and wanted to educate themselves on what happened to her there. her fiance, shane bauer, and their friend, josh fattal as well. bower and fattal remain incarcerated. the two along with shourd were charged with spying after they mistakenly crossed into iran from the border shared with iraq. today's event started with a showing of a 20-minute documentary that shows the region where the three were captured and also details what happened to them. shourd says while people have a lot going on in their own lives she hopes people will pay attention to what is happening in iran and stand up against what she says is extreme injustice. >> not only is it important that people kee

. ♪ [ ukulele ] >>> go ahead evening, i'm diane dwyer.come back to this special edition of nbc bay area news. we are on right now instead of "nightly news" because of nbc's coverage of the belmont stakes earlier tonight. after weeks of relative calm, fighting has renewed in two cities in libya. reports say dozens of people have been killed as pro-gadhafi forces and rebels are fighting for control. nbc's stephanie gosk reports from tripoli. >> reporter: fighting has broken out in two key libyan cities that for weeks had been quiet. the city west of tripoli only 30 miles from this city rebels are reportedly fighting pro-gadhafi forces. this is really one of the cities where the uprising began. there were weeks of brutal fighting between rebels and gadhafi's forces, eventually after a brutal crackdown, gadhafi took control of that city. it's significant now that rebels have reportedly moved in there. the second city is the city of misrata where there was very heavy fighting but rebels took control. gadhafi has moved back in and started shell

i'm diane dwyer. police tonight in east palo alto are investigating a killing that they say strikes at the heart of the community. that's because the victim is a 3-month-old boy. investigators called in help from neighboring police departments and vowed to track down the killers. nbc bay area's kimberly tere is here with more on what happened and the search for the gunmen. kimberly? >> reporter: diane, east palo alto has come a long way in curbing violence. this is the second homicide of the year. at this time last year they had four. but it is a heinous crime, as you mentioned. police say they have promising leads at this hour, and that's because they called in extra resources to canvas a neighborhood with a the shooting happened. they say they are putting everything into looking for those responsible for this act. east palo alto police say the early morning shooting that killed a 3-month-old baby was no accident. >> why they were targeted is the part that we have to find out. >> reporter: just befor
