i'm diane dwyer. authorities are still investigating tonight what caused a crash that killed a family of four. relatives spoke to nbc about the loss and what happened and who the relatives blame. >> this was supposed to be the trip of a lifetime. a chance for a father to show the family the place he visited when he was a child. >> when i ran into robert or the girls, it brightened my whole day. they were happy and enjoying life. the family, were at the beginning of a three-week camping trip when something terribly wrong. the family was hit by a tractor trailer and there was an explosion. >> the driver of the other vehicle survived and i would say you can do everything right and have a bad outcome and i think that is what happened here. i think you know the road was slippery, the road was steep and sometimes these things happen and that, um, rather the lesson is to hold your loved ones close and enjoy them when you are with them. >> the driver of the truck was detained at the scene and then released. t

. >>> good evening, i'm diane dwyer. family and friends of michelle le are in heyward today holding a fund-raiser to support continuing efforts to search for her. loved ones say they will continue searching until she's found. kimberly terry is in heyward with more. >> reporter: it's been just over two months since michelle le was last seen and every bit of money from this car wash will go into search efforts into looking for. search efforts are not cheap. the car wash runs another hour, if you're interested it is at says letter on hisperion boulevard in heyward. she was last seen on may 27th, doing clinical rotations at the kaiser medical center in heyward. she said she needed to grab something from her car and never returned. now some new information, heyward police have classified this case as a homicide. they did tell us they are still working on processing evidence. they have received some results back from the lab, which has helped them narrow down suspects. police also say they're continuing to conduct interviews a

. >>> good evening, i'm diane dwyer. imagine floating alone at sea for 16 hours in shark infested waters trying to survive. it was almost a week ago that that holiday fishing boat capsized sending 43 people into the sea of cortese. tonight one of the survivors, charles gibson of the east bay spoke about his ordeal with nbc. monty francis is in san francisco with the latest on that. >> reporter: one of the survivors is the chief of police at contra costa college, his name is college gibson, today in martinez he shared his story. gibson worked for 30 years in the oakland police department and did two tours in vietnam. nothing prepared him for what happened last sunday. he was fast asleep on the fishing boat when the ship began to sink at about 2:30 in the morning. he was wearing headphones and a snoring machine to trite his sleep apnea, and he would have died had a friend not woken him up. he ran above deck without any clothes and was immediately thrown from the boat with a huge wave. once in the water with a life vest, he

. >>> good evening, i'm garvin thomas in for diane dwyer. san francisco police announced a short while ago they have arrested two men in connection with the shooting of an 11-year-old girl last night. kim berry terry is live at san francisco general hospital, where the girl is being treated. i understand you have spoken with her family? >> we have heard from her family, who says she's in critical but stable condition here at san francisco general hospital. they say was shot in the shoulder area, very close to one of her lungs. the shooting happened at about 11:15 in the city's western edition neighborhood. a group of men were arguing when one of them pulled out a gun and started firing. one of those bullets went into an apartment striking a girl who was there for a sleepover with her cousin. the victim's uncle heard six to seven shots and his niece came out and said she had been shot. >> she was alert. she talked to me all the time while she was shot until the ambulance arrived. and i told her, keep calm but stay awake, she didn't cry. she j

. >>> good evening, i'm diane dwyer. we begin with that triple killing in richmond.t happened around 4:30 this afternoon inside richmond's notorious iron triangle neighborhood. police say the three men were found dead after a close range gunfight, investigators say one of the victims, 36-year-old michael anderson lived in the un unit, police identified the other two victims as dontae daloney of oakland. they were all found dead in the same room. >> it's a fairly small room and a lot of physical evident. >> we're told the person of interest was taken down to police headquarters for a statement, there's no suspect in custody at this time. in the past weekend richmond by the way, six people have been killed. >> hope is fading for seven bay area fishermen lost in the sea of cortese off the coast of mexico. a survivor of that holiday fishing trip is home tonight and says he's not ready to give up on his friends. he's also sharing his incredible tale of survival. monty francis is in san francisco with that story for us. monty? >> one of the survivors is the chief of police

i'm diane dwyer. we have new information on that officer-involved shooting in the bay view this weekend. police in san francisco now say they have recovered the gun that was used in the shooting. this picture of the aftermath is from a cell phone video posted on youtube, we have frozen the picture to show what may be a gun on the sidewalk, appears to have a black handle and silver barrel. this is key evidence in the case. officers say they were chasing a suspect who did not pay his fare on muni. the suspect opened fire as he ran and they returned fire and killed him. video shows handgun as we mentioned near the site of the shooting. with the help from witnesses police were able to identify the individual who witnesses say took the gun from the scene. police say they found the man and retrieved the gun. overnight as you sioux see here angry demonstrators gathered in san francisco's mission nabd. bystanders say the protest may have been over yesterday's shooting in the bay view tcht protest was over by

i'm diane dwyer. we begin in san francisco tonight with more developments from the deadly officer-involved shooting this weekend. frustration spilled into other parts of the city overnight, and some critics are now calling for an independent investigation into the shooting. nbc bay area's elise kirschner is in san francisco where investigators say new cell phone video from the scene justifies officers' actions, but some witnesses disagree. elise? >> reporter: well, diane, as sfpd has been saying all along that the suspect fired first, but they were unable to recover a weapon. now thanks to cell phone video at the scene, they tracked down a gun, a gun they say the suspect used. you can see it in clear view, amateur video showing a gun lying on third street, not far from where san francisco police shot and ultimately killed a 19-year-old bayview man. >> i think those police really need to be checked. they probably should be suspended without pay. >> reporter: but authorities say it's the same gun the sl

i'm garvin thomas in for diane dwyer tonight. we begin with breaking news in san francisco where a bart police officer has shot a suspect at a bart station. now this is all happening as we speak at the civic center bart station. the actual station is closed down right now. they are not letting people in out of the station. any trains that are going on the line are passing through without stopping. this all happened within the last couple of hours. reports are again that the information we've gotten so far from the bart spokesman is that a knife-wielding man was shot by an officer at the station. we do know that the suspect in this case, the man who was shot, is on his way to the hospital. no word right now on the condition of the suspect. we're going to have a lot more on this story throughout the newscast. nbc bay area's george kitayama is heading to the scene right now. this all of course hits a raw nerve in the bay area because of the shooting of oscar grant on an oakland bart platform in 2009. officer mehserle served 11 month

good evening, i'm diane dwyer. dozens of the teenagers came as far away as new york for the outdoor leadershipraining program in alaska. they had been in the wilderness for aboutsh a month and were crossing a river when the attack happened. the bear who was apparently protecting a cub attacked. nbc's bay area kimberly tere spoke with the family of the bay area boy who survived the attack, and what a story he has to tell. kimberly? >> reporter: victor martin got away lucky with only a bite to his ankle. he has been treated and released and is already headed home. expected here at oakland international airport tomorrow evening. victor martin of richmond was among a group of teenagers taking a survival skills course in the alaskan wilderness when a brown bear with her cub attacked. >> he said the bear had chased him, and he fell down and started kicking, and all he could do is kick and pray. >> in this case, it sounds like they just stumbled upon a bear. it was the wrong place at the wrong time. >> reporter: it happen

as diane dwyer reports, this latest killing has struck a raw nerve in that african-american community>> give us mobility and understanding as to ensure that this will never happen again. >> reporter: what they want to never happen again, they say, is the senseless death of a young black man in their community. family and friends of 25-year-old john caldwell gathered for a candlelight vigil at the gas station in hayward, just across the street from st. rose hospital, where he was gunned down. >> he was just at the gas station. like you and i. >> reporter: police say someone walked up to caldwell's car at about 5:30 in broad daylight and shot him multiple times. it doesn't appear random, they say. family members say this killing is especially difficult, because caldwell was best friends with oscar grant. grant is the man who was shot and killed by a bart police officer on new year's day in 2009. caldwell was on that bart platform that night as well, and filed a $5 million civil rights lawsuit against bart. that case has not yet gone to trial. the two families are close and caldwell was
