we also heard from diane feinstein who is the democrat who is the senate intelligence committee share. . she's going to investigate why they weren't notified earlier. they weren't informed until friday. so several days later. so a lot of questions and this is just the beginning really of the questions. >> let's talk about paula broadwell. what do you know about her? how she met general david petraeus? >> she's a mother of two, a married mother of two. she lives in charlotte, north carolina. she met him in 2006 when the general came to the graduate school at harvard to give a speech. so she was a student then. she met him and she started later on doing a dissertation on him. all the research she decided to turn into a book. so she was keeping in touch with him by e-mail. and of course, as you know, she spent time with him in afghanistan and went on the long runs we heard her talk about in interviews. so it seems like she's known him for several years. >> thank you very much. appreciate it. >>> here's a question for you. is the republican party in need of a makeover? how do they revamp

now, the head of the senate intelligence committee, diane feinstein and jennifer mentioned her, saying she first learned about this whole thing from the media. she told chris wallace in a fox news sunday exclusive, when she found out it was like a lightning bolt. she says she's been briefed by the fbi and wants to know why she wasn't told sooner than this, saying it could have had an effect on national security. >> we received no advanced notice. it was like a lightning bolt. i think we should have been told. there is a way to do it and that is just to inform the chair and the vice-chairman of both committees. >> harris: feinstein says she doesn't think general petraeus's resignation had anything to do with the hearings the upcoming, about the killing of four americans in benghazi. he may still be called to testify. two other lawmakers say the timing of this resignation is very suspicious. and republican congressman kasich, and they want to know wh what, who knew what when and what the silence was about. >> this was the head of the cia for goodness sake, we need to know when they knew

." >> the interesting thing about that was that that made the point that diane feinstein wanted to makeay is that the fbi is not sharing with the people they are supposed to share with. you have a republican house chairman and a democratic senate chairman both saying they are not being properly briefed. and for months at a time. >> i understand the basic idea that intelligence matters need to be overseen aggressively by congress and that congress needs to be more aggressive than they have been. they have powers to do things confidently in ways that other parts of congress don't have because intelligence can be so sensitive. i don't necessarily understand why private marital infidelity would become a matter of national significance that congress needed to be briefed on. is that a clear line for you? >> that's the fbi's point. once they knew this was just a private matter. but the point that feinstein made today is that there were stages along the way where this was considered a national security breach. where initially, they thought the director's e-mails had been hacked into and someone

i mean, senator diane feinstein even said that she did not think the president should have accepted petraeus' resignation. that an affair was not a disqualification to head the cia. so i think it's going to be interesting now to see if he does testify how he's treated. is he going to be grilled on some of these more personal details? are they going to keep it all on intelligence matters and what went on in libya? i think that's going to be fascinating to watch next week. >> and do you think he will come and testify on capitol hill? he's scheduled to do this in a week. >> there's going to be a lot of pressure as david said to do that, i think. and i think one thing to keep in mind, this has been a tough year for folks in these sort of high pro fill positions beyond reproach. we had the secret service scandal related sex scandal there. you also had the nominee tonight ambassador to iraq to withdraw his name after e-mails that he had sent to a "wall street journal" reporter with whom he was having an affair were released. that's actually the same congressional committee that had an oversight he

mccain and graham have made those cases which also diane feinstein and democrats have as well. not sure like the focus on what susan rice said exactly when is helpful to this discussion. i think you'll see the republicans focus more on what actually happened and how to prevent that and less on politicizing it as we go forward. >> speaking of politics, the president really going to bat for susan rice in his press conference in terms of supporting what could be her nomination to take hillary clinton's place as secretary of state. is this a fight that you think is worth it from what you know about her tenure there at the u.n. and elsewhere? >> i didn't seat president as really -- it was a defense of susan rice but i thought it was more the president of saying i want a second term. i'll pick who i want to for my cabinet thank you. susan rice may get picked. but if not the president was sort of drawing a line and saying the republicans don't get to veto someone i want before i even start deciding myself. >> okay. back to benghazi, morris, what further does the white house oat gop la
