it's 8:25 on this thursday, and i'm diane macedo. we are following several breaking news stories this morning, one in brooklyn. firefighters are on the scene of a house fire that investigators are now calling suspicious. it's believed to have started on the front porch of the home on glenwood, road, and the fire grew so big it spread to a home nearby. three children and two adults in the home suffered injuries as did several firefighters who went to the scene. >>> a driver crashed his car near 82 in holtsville last night and then a good samaritan chased him across the service road as he took off, and the good samaritan was hit by a van. the man he was chasing took off and stole a tractor trailer and crashed it 7 miles away. police caught up to him there. >>> applications accepted today through monday for new yorkers to see the pope in central park. you can visit nyc.gov or you can call 311, and the winners will be notified next thursday. >>> incoming late show host, stephen colbert has agreed to take part in a benefit for the montcla

i'm diane macedo in for cindy hsu. a trip to the grocery store ended up with a woman dead and suspect on the run. police are searching for the driver who hit her and kept going. cbs2's mark morgan spoke to the victim's brother. >> reporter: marlene zotti was crossing here with her walker and groceries when she was struck and killed. the driver sped away. >> she's my little baby. so beautiful. she's got a good heart. >> reporter: robert said he and his sister went to the grocery store together two or three times a month. but this time she said she didn't need him to stay in the store with her. >> i usually take her there and bring her home. she said, go home and i'll call you when i'm ready. >> reporter: she was hit by white minivan, her groceries scattered and her walker in the street. >> i've been living here about 20 years, never seen this happen. bad tragedy. >> reporter: here on her block, her neighbors are stunned they have lost one of their own. >> she was always going to the park and watch the kids play and stuf

. >> i'm diane macedo in for cindy hsu. >>> investigators are searching for clues at this shooting range after a child was shot. >> mark morgan is live in randolph. i'm live at the shooting range, and more on the facility in a moment. around 7:30 this morning police responded to a call of a child with a self-inflicted gun shot wound here at the training center, and we are told the child is in the hospital in critical condition, and no other information has been released thus far. let's show you the area shortly after the incident occurred. we arrived ho minutes after the shooting, and you can see 20 to 25 people lined up on the sidewalk. fat silty was evacuated, and those folks are waiting to be questioned by the police as to what they saw or heard at the time of the incident. randolph police officers here, and the morris county sheriff's department has been here and the morris county prosecutor's office has been here as well with the authorities coming and going throughout the evening, and i mentioned a little bit about the facility. the rtsp website says it's a 35,000 square foot facil

i'm diane macedo, in for cindy hsu. complaints about the homeless are on the rise, and some say it's a crisis. former mayor kristine johnson said the mayor is not doing enough. >> reporter: this week the harlem station was cleared of the homeless that were living here, but many have come back. underneath the elevated train tracks, the homeless camp on the sidewalk, and one man sleeps next to his shopping cart, and another without shoes is passed out on card board. despite the officers' efforts to clear the area, they keep returning. >> i just couldn't live that way. >> reporter: omar used to be homeless, and he now has housing and a job. he says improve care for the mentally ill. >> most shelters, the majority throughout the city are former patients. >> reporter: rudy giuliani argued it's the city's responsibility to get the homeless off the streets and find them treatment, shelter, and even a job. taking a shot at the current mayor, giuliani wrote "the so called progressive view that people have a right to live on the
