diane macedo has more from springfield gardens this morning. police are now onscene investigating here at 145th avenue trying to piece together what happened here and trying to find that suspect still at large. police say it started as a craigslist ad, an off-duty police officer came to spring gardens to respond to a listing for a used white bmw. >> i live right across the street and it was about 10:35 and i was laying in bed watching tv and i heard a total of five to six gunshots. loud gunshots. about maybe five minutes later, i heard sirens and helicopters and then i knew it was something serious. >> i thought it was fire crackers. and i just slammed the door because i was like, i don't know what's going on but i didn't feel that safe. >> after that, i yell. >> reporter: the nypd says at least some of those gunshots came from the off-duty officer the 32-year-old at gun point at 145th street near guy r brewer boulevard. >> it was consecutive. it was like boom, boom, boom, like six of those. >> reporter: the bullets hit one suspect who died at

. >> diane macedo is live where firefighters are still batting the flames at this hour. >> reporter: chris and mary, you can see the smoke coming out of the home here on brook lane as firefighters continue to try to put the fire out. we are told it started just after 2:30 this morning and you can see from witness video, this is a large home and flames are just shooting from the roof and consuming almost the entire thety of the inside of the home as well. so firefighters have a big job here. we are hearing the home was under construction but have not been able to confirm that. we have been talking to firefighters here on the scene that there are no injuries at this time. so that's the one bright spot here but of course, this had is very fluid situation at the moment. we are not sure if the fire happened to jump to other homes or damage other homes but for now, this one looks to have undergone severe damage. and we are waiting for an update from the fire department that we hope to get in the next 10 to 15 minutes. in new jersey, live here, diane macedo, cbs 2 news. >> thank you. >>> a

diane macedo has the latest on the investigation. >> reporter: flames shot out of the roof and windows of 16 hot brook lane as anybodies watched entire section of the brand new home crumble away. >> i woke up around 3:15 and really big. the flames looked taller than the house. >> reporter: police say the first call came in around 2:19 this morning and several fire departments all responded. >> we saw the fire trucks come with a ladder. a man shot the water up and over into the roof. maybe 4:00 in the morning. >> reporter: fors finally got the flames under control around 4:45. they say the home was still under construction so no one was inside at the time which helped to avoid injuries. still the homeowners were hoping to move in in two weeks. >> we were hoping that they move in, our neighbors and we feel really sad for them. >> especially right before the holiday. you know, our heart goes out to them. really, really does. >> reporter: the big question now is, what caused the fire? the fire marshall's office and investigating as well as the home detective department. >> the family's ide

cbs 2's diane macedo has new surveillance video and also witness accounts. >> reporter: who was behind the wheel of this car and what made it hit this fried chicken in queens village this morning? neighbors say they didn't see what happened. but they heard it. >> there was a loud sound. you heard the screech of a car and a boom so you know it was a crash of some kind but maybe a few minutes later, you heard the siren from the police car and what sounded like an ambulance. a deli next door says he also felt the crash. >> i hit another car. the tire, it was a lot of noise like high speed something and after that seconds i hear the building shaking and i hear next door the car go inside. >> reporter: surveillance video shows the moments leading up to the crash. it cuts right across the intersection on springfield boulevard. here at the scene you can see the tire tracks and debris left behind as the car slammed into this building and hit two men in their 20s leaving each of them with a broken leg. >> i see him lying on the floor. somebody crying. >> reporter: while many rushed to help, pol
