fox business network diane macedo is here to breakdown the numbers. bummer, diane. >> it will be for many. good news most americans got pay raises in 2012. average weekly earnings rose 2.4 percent over the course of the year. the bad news is now that the fiscal cliff deal let the payroll tax cut expire we can kiss the gains good-bye. that's accordling to a new report which shows in only a month the average american worker will lose all of the 2012 gain in weekly earnings. inflation and weekly earnings are down 1.4 percent compared to this time last year. with shrinking paychecks and less take home pay americans are expected to spend a lot less which could seriously hurt the already struggling u.s. economy. a study from the federal reserve bank in new york show them spending 28 percent of the payroll tax cut more than necessary to expend from the tax cuts. while the tax cuts led workers to mostly pay down debt following by increasing consumption they suggest the expiration will lead workers across demographic groups. the fed also notes how people plan

diane macedo has the details for us. >> like it or not it will soon be history t.oney and prevent fraud by requiring the government to go electronically starting march 1st. they are being asked to sign up for direct deposit or debit card at go direct.org or wall 1-800-333-1795. those that don't will start to receive letters come march in making the switch. there are exceptions to the rules any one who was born before may 1st can still receive a paper check if they want to. others can request a waiver without sufficient banking infrastructure or electronic payment would impose another hardship. some think electronic payments are the way to go. about 93 percent of social security payments are made electronically. new retirees automatically receive benefits that way. it estimate converting the remaining paper checks to electronic payments can save taxpayers over 1 billion over the next ten years. >> diane macedo, thank you very much. >> coming up next on "the rundown". talk about being kicked when you are down. a pro soccer player takes out his frustration on the ball

fox business network diane macedo has more. >> the inspector general for the asset release program saysnew report taxpayers stand to lose $27 billion from the 2008 financial bailout. 5 billion more than estimated in the fall. why the increase? according to the report the treasury department has incurred more losses from selling shares a from bailed out companies and then there are the shares it hasn't sold yet. ally financial general motors former financial arm still owes 14.6 billion of the 17.2 billion it received. taxpayers can expect to lose r5.5 billion on that investment and the last treasury for having no plan to get out of this since ally shares are not publicly traded. of the 26 billion invested in gm they would have to sell shares at an average price of $72 each more than double the current value. bailout money still owed to u.s. taxpayers now total 67.3 billion down from 84.2 billion in september. american international group finished $182 billion bailout last year that was the biggest one of the crisis. inspector general also says the office has been effective in battling fr

diane macedo is here with the lathes. >> tax fraud appears to be a popular past time in u.n. prisons. a new report by treasurer's department says the irs detected more than 173,000 fraudulent tax returns from inmates last year. that's more than twice the number detected in 2010. some inmates steel identity from obituaries some even use their own but fudge the numbers to try to get much bigger tax refunds they deserve. in 2012 two inmates alone tried to claim more than $1 billion. the good news is the irs says it stopped those two and others from illegally claiming 2.5 billi 2.5 billion in last refunds last year. they are stepping up enforcement but says more needs to be done. $35 million slipped through the cracks and so the irs says it's very successful at detecting and stopping in incorrect refunds when prisoner data is available it adds there are significant challenges getting complete and consistent data from the multiple jurisdictions involved. still the agency says if committed to enhancing the process is to further minimize prisoner refund fraud. >> it is now 44 after

fox business network diane macedo joins us. >> the postal service board of governors directed the agencieso speed up cost cutting and revenue boosting as legislation to over hall it's operations remain stalled. the 238-year-old institution has recently been struggling to keep up with massive payments for future retiree benefits and more and more americans communicate by e-mail now. they are bringing in less revenue as well. last year the agency lost almost $16 billion ran into the legal borrowing limit and twidefaulte twice on required payments. while they have been counting on congress to pass legislation bliem nating saturday mail delivery and assaulter others budget fights and other priorities get in the way. the postal service could run out of money by october. still the board of governors is saying don't act too aggressively and phase in new cost cutting measures to avoid damaging quality of service. the postal service hasn't revealed what measure it tends to pursue but it will reveal them once it informs postal employees of the details. >> you will let us know after that. >>> 47 afte

diane macedo has the story. >> what is this about?her, facebook users started receiving an e-mail friday with a class action lawsuit against the site. they violated user's privacy by images using profile maim in sponsored stories a form of advertising introduce the in 2011 which shows when a user like add certain page or played a game or shared a link. unlike many facebook users they cannot opt out of sponsored stories. the parties are working on implementing a $20 million settlement in the case. the e-mail looked so much like a scam some fear it will end up in people's trash boxes instead. it does include bank route number that's often a red flag for e-mail scams but the settlement is real and taking the 10 minutes to fill out the form could make you 10 bucks. if too man fee people file claims in a timely fashion there may be too many people to pay it will instead go to an already agrowed to set -- agreed to set of charities. you increase a chance of making money or charity. >> or you saul get a penny when it is all said and done. >>

diane macedo has the list of worst offenders. >> the american customer satisfaction index rated customerscustomer service. some of the results may surprise you while others probably won't. to start things off long island power takes the top spot for worst customer service after leaving thousands of customers powerless after two weeks of hurricane sandy. it was criticized for handling of the phone. >> the customers also suffered from long power outages last year. charter communications gets the third ranging due to perennial industry laggers. comcast customer service was so bad it lost more than 400,000 sub skrieshs last year. while facebook keeps getting more subscribers it comes in at number 5. seems as more people use it more people complain about it. united replaces delta as the lowest rated airline. time warner cable gets number 7 after introducing a highly unpopular fee this october. linkedin ceo was named one of the best ceo's but customers were dissatisfied enough to get number 8. cox cable gets number 9 and american airlines comes in at number 10 after a surge of canceled flights
