um, well, i mean, dianne feinstein probably wouldn't be u.s. senator, but i don't know if that has much effect on the life of the city. there wouldn't be streets and buildings named after harvey and george. but other than that i don't think it really would be a different city. a lot of time has gone by. history flows forward, and things go on. and i don't see that on a daily kind of basis it makes much difference. in fact, we've got district elections again, right? i mean, they're back in again. i can never keep track. i don't live in the city anymore. it's such a pity i don't get to vote for the board of supervisors. but i can never keep track of when their in and when they're out because it seems to be a constant back and forth. but i honestly would say that i don't know of any differences that we would feel in our lives today if this hadn't occurred except for those few names and so on. anyone disagree? someone want to make -- give a better answer that be that? -- than that? that was a pretty weak answer. dianne feinstein had run twice unsuccessfully for the mayor. she was telling her friends she was no longer going to run for political office when her term on the board of supervisors was present was up. she was going to withdraw from politics. on the day of the assassinations as i'm sure everybody in this room knows, it was chic who made the announcement in a pink pantsuit splattered with blood from having been one of the first people to harvey milk's body and having harvey milk's bordallo fervor. and of course, her good performance as the mayor catapulted her career for word es and she has become, as we know, the most powerful democratic politician in the state of california and has been for quite a long time now. and because she became mayor and george moscone was no longer a year, the city moved in a more conservative wing, particularly in regard to manhattan, which don't have to explain in this room i suppose. the skyline changed much more dramatically quickly than it would have under moscone who was alive with those groups who opposed a ra

you may know that he was appointed by mayor dianne feinstein. at the time, he was a maritime attorney and was the senior partner at a law firm. he was then general counsel for a major maritime organization. during his tenure as the port director and at the commission, he did a lot of amazing things. first and foremost was the purchase of the bethlehem shipyard, which is now our longest serving west coast shipyard, which we are extraordinarily proud of. by doing this, he was able to ensure we had a thriving ship repair industry here in san francisco. it has obviously gone on for decades after that purchase, and it employs approximately 400 skilled union workers. so that is a great and lasting feet. in 1986, he negotiated a new agreement with the national shipping co. of the philippines at pier 80. this increase our revenues substantially. he negotiated a lease with the chinese province for 30,000 square feet of space at the pier 27 bulkhead. and he negotiated an agreement to serve a long and other countries, bringing in an additional 100 teu's a

lee says he was persuaded to run for the office by political heavyweights including senator dianne feinstein. with more on today's announcement let's go to nbc bay area's tracy grant live in san francisco. tracy, there was a bit of a ruckus earlier today. what is that all about? >> well, it was really weird actually. it seems like a normal political event and then things got a little bit out of control. you know, it's all about this. the fact that ed lee says he changed his mind. his critics and competitors say he went back on his word. and now people on both sides of this issue will be weighing in election day.c1:cc1: >> are you going to step down because you lied to the board of supervisors and -- >> we need to file. >> reporter: before ed lee even filled out any of the paperwork the fighting began. >> this is bologna, folks. you can't throw me out for no reason. who do you think you are? >> it may have been a lone protester who showed up at the san francisco registrar's office lee's to object to mayor cc1: decision to officially ernt the race. others expressed the same emotions especially
