good morning, i'm dick brennan in for chris wragge. >> and i'm mary calvi. that slashing taking place early this morning at a subway station in greenwich village. >> janelle burrell is live at >> reporter: dick and mary, detectives are still out here intersection of bleecker and lafayette. that slashing happened on the platform of the 6 train here around 3:30 this morning. at this point police say it's not clear whether they're looking for one person or multiple suspects in this attack but we can tell you the victim is a male in his 30s or 40s. he was slashed on his neck, also his hand here this morning. he was rushed to bellevue hospital where he is listed in stable condition. as you know, this is the latest in a rash of incidents here in the city over the last several months. the nypd reporting that the total number of knife attacks up about 24% since last year, and there have been more than 1,000 stabbings or slashing incidents here in the city since january. again, police at this hour still searching for the person or the people responsible in this latest

cbs 2's dick brennan is live in downtown brooklyn with the late details. dick. >> reporter: the hearing was to decide were to throw out the conviction of officer peter liang. he was convicted of shooting the defense says a juror lied while being chosen saying that nobody in his family had been accused of a crime but later the juror told a newspaper that his father went to prison for 7 years for accidentally shooting someone and he said that a police officer should be treated like everyone else. now, at today hearing vargas said he wasn't close to his father and wasn't aware of the pass. his attorneys also questioned vargas about possibly anti- police facebook postings. now, where do we go from here? nobody knew that the hearing would take so long so it's going to go until tomorrow. it's just adjourned about 15 minutes ago. the hearing resumes tomorrow on whether to throw out the case. what's interesting is that liang was supposed to be sentenced tomorrow. now, that is postponed until april 19th as we await a ruling in this hearing. live in downtown brooklyn

i'm dick brennan in for cindy hsu. a fire that broke out more than four hours ago is still burning, leaving families homeless and investigators searching for answers. cbs 2's hazel sanchez is live in cyprus hills with the latest. hazel? >> reporter: dick, at this point we still don't know what caused this five-alarm fire. as you said, it started at about 6:30. firefighters say they have it contained, but you can see they are stillwatering down hot spots in some of the homes, at least three homes a total loss. the fire spread to three other buildings, including a church, but those structures can be repaired. and thankfully, all lives were spared. the flames were intense and moved fast, devouring three multifamily homes on arlington avenue, including pillar pena's home for eight years. she was at work when the fire started. >> somebody called me and told don't know. >> watching this, i can't imagine what's going through your mind right now. >> i know. everything is inside, you know? the best thing is nobody got hurt. bla
