manchin, senator tom coburn, my friend from oklahoma, senator alexander, senator tom carper, senator dick durbin, and senator tom harkin. we had a lot of meetings, we had a lot of discussions, we had a lot of negotiations, and ultimately worked together to determine a fair and equitable way to set the rate for student loans from the federal government based upon the federal government's own cost of borrowing money and combine the best ideas from both plans. we got the strong support of the president who encouraged the democratic members of our group to join in these negotiations and we reached a consensus. the bipartisan student loan certainty act which passed this body with something like 80 votes, and that has made a real difference for our students. here are some numbers: 50 billion, 5 billion, 277 billion. those are the answers. what are the questions? the first is $50 billion is the amount of money that students will save over the next ten years based upon the difference of what the interest rate would have been and what it's going to be. this says 3.8%. it is lower. it's $3.76%. -- 3.76%.

that did not prevent the meeting between the person that runs the tsa as well as dick durbin and rahmhey met for a half hour talking about the need to do better. all of this comes just a few days after the tsa announce second down 58 more officers will be coming to chicago airports this summer. they're adding staff to the largest airports around the country. remember, last weekend and we saw it last week as well, there were hundreds of people around the country who missed flights because they were stuck in long tsa lines. sometimes for two or three hours. the tsa blames the long lines on the system breaking down and the need to improve the situation. >> i think this summer is going to continue to be a challenge. we have passenger growth. i'm not -- i have as much staff as i need. i think we're doing everything question to mitigate that at the largest airports. my goal is -- i think you'll still see crowds in airports. my goal is to keep you moving. we can't have a situation like we will here in chicago again. >> one person who met with him today was american airlines ceo doug parker.

from hese headlines politico looking at chicago and senator dick durbin targeting for help with those long security delays. look at that crowd. that's amazing. guest: it's a very difficult situation. and again i think that there are -- it's a multifaceted challenge. for instance, what we go through at the checkpoints let's understand that a great deal of that is in the law. in other words, every person must be screened. that's a legal requirement. t.s.a. doesn't have flexibility on that. and what that means is that it leads to some of these unfortunate situations where the elderly woman the disabled person can have a bad experience at the check point. nonetheless, the law requires those people to go through screening. how we check a baggage and screen it. the technology that is used for that is statutorily mandated. there's no choice for flexibility in how all of that is done. so i think that there needs to be perhaps some review of the statute and the process and procedures that t.s.a. is manned dated to do before -- because it's not just management can't arbitrarily change some of t
