there is nobody taking the fight directly to tea partiers like dick lugar is. >> michael steele, two olls have come out recently in indiana. one had lugar released his own poll that showed him under 50%. in a republican primary. i look at that and i'm going, how do you -- how does a guy who's been in the united states senate for almost 40 years, if he's sitting at 45, those next five points are almost impossible. >> it's a mountain. it's something that i picked up when i was on the road the last year or so going around the country and recognizing the real fervor and the power of these grassroots activists within the tea party structure, if you will. and they are playingor keeps here. they have made it very clear. you get our support when you demonstrate that you're going to adhere to certain principles. you have someone like a lugar and a hatch, these are guys that understand how this town works. let me bring my conservatism to the table and finesse it to what's in the best interest of our state. what we're running into is hard charging, hardball politics. >> they don't respect that.

you like republicans like dick lugar, john mccain, lindsey graham, colin powell, not a fan of micheleover norquist. some of that sounds ideological. you like the moderate republicans. the center of gravity in the party has shifted. >> in my next life, i want to come back as the member of the baerks whether the settlers in israel or the republican party. at some point someone has to talk straight to these people. when you have a party where it is an act of courage, the ultimate act of courage to say climate change may actually be real. that's nuts. that's so outside where the science is. and that's a dangerous place i think for the republicans to take. the country can't be serious if our biggest opposition party isn't serious about these issues. >> if the republican party has been highjacked by what you call the extremist tea party, has the mainstream press reflected that? >> i think certainly the commentary, when i see the columns, yes. >> in the straight reporting is there a little too much he-said/she-said and not reflecting what some would say is a historical shift? >> you would be

. >> the two people you served with every year since then, dick lugar and orrin hatch, both runs forir lives in republican primaries. do you think it's unfair that they're having to deal with this tea party insurgency a bit that their record is, they're just not -- are they really not conservative enough for your republican party? >> they are very, very conservative, but here's what you've got to look at. the dynamics of american politics, and keeping everybody, even chuck grassley, anybody else that's been in the senate a long time, we've got to make sure we stay responsive to the grass roots of america. the representative policies of our government, and whether it's right or wrong for lugar or hatch to have opposition, it is what's traditional about american politics, and they as well as every one of us have to be very thankful for the tea party movement, because, you know, prior to this year, everything was, are we going to increase expenditures a little built or a lot? >> you think tea party movement has been good for republicans? >> absolutely. because everything now in washingt

. >> and before that, dan quayle and dick lugar also withdrew from seeking the presidency. >> what can viewers expect when the gavel comes down at noon central, 1:00 eastern? >> it is going to be a packed house. we will kick things off with a short video. i will come out and make some short remarks. we will hear from our governor, our lieutenant governor, and approximately 1:00 eastern, all of the candidates will be on stage for a group photo so that the entire arena can see all of the candidates on stage at once. we will have a little video that celebrates and tells the story of iowa being the first of the caucus states. and then we will have speeches from the candidates. there'll be a few speeches interspersed in between. >> organizing is the key for the straw poll and the presidential caucuses. how does a candidate organize in iowa? what is the procedure? >> you need to find county chairs in all 99 counties of iowa and it does not stop there. there will be individual precincts around the state on caucus night. the need to find a leader in each precinct who will take time to go throu
